Masters of the Universe: Revelation puts a new spin on the origin of He-Man’s power sword in anticipation of the upcoming Netflix series.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Revelation #1 by Kevin Smith, Rob David, Tim Sheridan, Mindy Lee, Rico Renzi, Kathleen Barnett, and Deron Bennett, on sale now.
Netflix’s upcoming Masters of the Universe: Revelation is a much anticipated direct sequel to the original 1983 animated series, and is rumored to uncover new secrets about He-Man and his allies on Eternia. The first of these secrets has just been revealed in the pages of Revelation‘s prequel comic book series, and it changes everything previously known about the Sword of Power.
Traveling through time, He-man witnesses King Grayskull seeking a weapon capable of defeating an extradimensional foe that has kidnapped his son. The king consults with the gods of his world who prove willing to assist Grayskull by granting him their magical power – if the king can supply a weapon capable of containing the power. The king learns of the existence of a special ore that he can use to forge such a weapon, but he unfortunately must make a deal with the devil in order to obtain the substance.
The lore surrounding He-Man and his sword has been somewhat muddled in the years since the franchise debuted in the early 80s. The He-Man and the Power Sword comic book by Donald F. Glut and Alfredo Alcala (packaged with the original 1982 action figure) explained that the Power Sword was split in two so that its full power would not end up in the wrong hands, but the new comic and series does not mention this.
The revised history now states that the Power Sword existed on its own long before being granted magical abilities by the gods of Eternia, and was tempered with an ore given by a being who resembles the evil Skeletor. This may link He-Man and his rival together in a way that has never before been revealed, considering that in the present day both possess one of two magical swords that were created in this way.
Whether or not this means that the Sword of Power will be split in two in the upcoming Netflix series remains a mystery, but there is little doubt that Kevin Smith has big plans in store for it as the lead writer of the show and its comic book prequel.
The concept of the Power Sword existing as two halves goes back to the earliest He-Man canon, but there is no guarantee that this is the route the new show will take. With any luck, this will be just one new aspect to the classic lore brought to the table by Revelation, even if it is really just a reinterpretation of something that has been there all along.
