HBO’s The Last of Us Casts Friday Night Lights Alum as Original Character

Friday Night Lights alum Brad Leland is starring in HBO’s The Last of Us TV series as a seemingly original character created for the show.

Brad Leland has confirmed he’s starring in HBO’s live-action TV adaptation of The Last of Us video games.

The actor talked about the series during an interview with A List Productions. “The Last of Us is now a new HBO series and they’re saying it’s probably going to be the most expensive one ever made,” said Leland. “So I’ve been in Canada shooting that and it does follow the game… It’s a ten-part series. The first year — they plan on doing more.”

Leland starred in NBC’s sports drama series Friday Night Lights as Buddy Garrity, a supporting player modeled after the actor’s character John Aubrey from the original 2004 Friday Night Lights movie. He also played recurring roles on the shows Justified, Veep and The Bureau and recently appeared opposite Robin Wright in her feature directorial debut, Land.

Based on the video games developed by Naughty Dog, HBO’s The Last of Us follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a “hardened survivor” hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year old girl, across the post-apocalyptic U.S. twenty years after the outbreak of a mutant Cordyceps fungus left the country in ruins, turning those infected into vicious zombie-like creatures. Leland is co-starring as Mr. Adler, a seemingly original character created for the show.

Mr. Adler isn’t the only character developed specifically for the series, either. HBO’s The Last of Us also stars Jeffrey Pierce — who voiced Tommy in The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II video games — as Perry, a rebel from a quarantine zone, who didn’t appear in the games. Merle Dandridge joins Leland and Pierce in the show’s supporting cast as Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies resistance movement and a role Dandridge played through a vocal/mo-cap performance in the games.

HBO’s The Last of Us reportedly costs at least $10 million per episode, making it one of the network’s most expensive projects ever (as Leland pointed out). Russian filmmaker Kantemir Balagov wrapped production on the pilot at the end of August, with production now underway on the first season’s remaining episodes.

Developed by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, HBO’s The Last of Us has yet to receive a premiere date.
