HBO Max’s Titans’ Curran Walters Discusses Red Hood

[ad_1]

The DC television series Titans has followed Dick Grayson since he stepped out of Batman’s shadow to adopt the vigilante identity of Nightwing. However, the Dark Knight always needs a Boy Wonder at his side, which led to Jason Todd (Curran Walters) debuting on the HBO Max series. Fans of the DC Universe are well aware of Jason Todd’s fate as Robin — being brutally murdered by the Joker in the controversial story arc “A Death in the Family.” But it remained to be seen if Titans‘ Jason Todd would meet the same fate as his comic book counterpart.

As Titans Season 3 trailer revealed, Jason Todd becomes a victim of a deadly Joker attack, leading to his transformation into the Red Hood. In an interview with CBR, Walters spoke about his new role as Red Hood, the differences between Robin and Red Hood costumes, filming that fateful scene, a major fatal event orchestrated by Red Hood, and more.

Titans Season 3 Characters

CBR: A big part of Titans Season 3 deals with Jason Todd’s transformation into Red Hood. How does it feel to finally reach this major landmark in Jason’s story?

I think it’s been such a cool thing to be a part of. Obviously, his storyline has been around in comic books for so long, as well as in an animated movie. Being able to be given the opportunity to play the first live-action version of it is great. And I think it’s a necessity for the storyline, so I’m glad we got to explore it.

Some of the trailers for Season 3 featured Joker beating Jason to death at an amusement park. What was it like to film that fateful scene?

A lot of emotions. Obviously, going back to the first question, it’s been such a historic scene in the comic books for so many years. So just being able to do that scene in real life was a tremendous honor.

Have you found any pros or cons to wearing the Red Hood costume, compared to your Robin suit?

Yeah, they are two totally different costumes. I think the Robin costume is a little easier to maneuver in. And that’s always going to be my costume. It was my first costume, so that thing is like my baby. The Red Hood costume, getting used to the mask, adjusting to acting with the mask, fighting with the mask and having a heavier costume, and being limited in mobility was definitely a challenge. But me and my amazing stunt team, we figured it out. We got it to work. So yeah, it turned out great.

Did you get the opportunity to do many of your own stunts?

We did a lot of training throughout the season. Obviously, with COVID we are limited on what we could do, as far as a lot of stuff, actually. But we prepared as much as possible. And anything that I was not comfortable with doing, my awesome stunt double was right by my side. We work well as a team.

Season 3 introduces Tim Drake, making it three Robins to appear on Titans. Will there be any interactions between Tim and Jason, and have you given any thought to a potential Robin team-up between Jason, Dick, and Tim?

[Laughs] That would be awesome. I think that’s what the fans want to see. Yeah, we explore a little bit of Tim and Jason for sure.

You mentioned some of the comics and movies earlier. Can you walk us through any of the research you did to prepare for becoming Red Hood? Were there any specific comic runs or specific movies you looked to for inspiration?

Yeah, I was under the Red Hood probably 100 times. I think as an actor, you got to make your own choices. You got to take what works in that moment as a character. Obviously, there was nothing to play off of as far as live-action. I got to set the bar. I think it turned out great. I read all of the comics too, back when I started Season 1. But I had read every comic with Jason Todd and Red Hood.

Curran Walters as Jason Todd in Titans Season 3, Episode 1.

One of the first three episodes features Red Hood orchestrating something he may not be able to atone for. Why do you think Red Hood singled out this character, and can fans expect something even worse from Jason as Season 3 continues?

Yes, Jason will have to live with that guilt when he’s not on the fear gas. And I think that’s the worst thing that comes out of this. He took out one of his own family members, which is a terrible thing to do, but it affects Jonathan Crane too and I think you guys get to see why.

To wrap up, what do you hope fans take away from your performance as Red Hood?

My emotional journey. Everything that I actually explore as a character, and my choices as an actor, so I think they’re gonna enjoy what I did.

Created by Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns and Greg Berlanti, Titans premiered in 2018. The first two seasons are currently available for streaming on HBO Max. Titans Season 3 is scheduled to hit screens on Aug. 12.
