HBO Max is developing an adult animated series based on Brian Michael Bendis and Ryan Sook’s run on DC’s Legion of Super-Heroes.
An adult animated series based upon writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Ryan Sook’s run on DC’s Legion of Super-Heroes is currently in the works at HBO Max.
Bendis — who has co-created such comic book characters as Miles Morales and Jessica Jones for Marvel and Naomi McDuffie for DC — confirmed the news himself via his official newsletter. “HBO Max has put me to work on a Legion of Super-Heroes TV show,” Bendis announced. “At the moment it is being developed as an adult animated show. Can you tell I am jumping up and down about this? I’ve been working on it for a while and last week I was sent to the next phase.”
Bendis continued, “‘Hey, bald dude! Didn’t you just last newsletter tell us that you were anti-bragging? That you had somehow matured out of bragging? How is this not bragging?’ That’s an excellent question, voice in my head. but I’m a die hard Legion fan! I know Legion news can be… infrequent. So many diehard Legion fans follow me so I asked special permission to update all of you on this project in development.”
The writer also confirmed that HBO Max’s Legion of Super-Heroes animated series would indeed be an adaptation of his and Sook’s run on the title. “And just like that series, on sale now, it will harken back to so many classics while at the same time doing what Legion does: pushing all the ideas of superheroes forward in every direction… I think Legion of Super-Heroes is among the greatest franchises in the history of comics and I’m as honored to be curating them as I was Spider-Man,” he said.
“So yes, Naomi, the show I helped create, is being made by others and I’m making a Legion of Super-Heroes show,” Bendis continued, referring to the live-action Naomi series that will be premiering in early 2022 on The CW. “Hollywood!” That said, Bendis was sure to note that since animation takes a while, fans “may not hear anything about this for a while as I’m just getting to work on it over the break… But, in the meantime, you can read the comic book version of these amazing characters both in our most recent series and in some of the greatest comics ever made.”
Created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, the Legion of Super-Heroes first appeared in 1958’s Adventure Comics #247, with the team having been rebooted in the comics multiple times since. A previous Legion of Super-Heroes animated series aired for 26 episodes across two seasons on Kids’ WB from 2006 to 2008.
Bendis’ run on Legion of Super-Heroes began in 2019 when he teamed with such artists as Jim Lee, Dusting Nguyen, Nicola Scott, Ryan Sook and more on the two-part limited series Legion of Super-Heroes: Millennium. The limited series was followed up by a Legion of Super-Heroes ongoing series, written by Bendis and illustrated by Sook, which saw Jon Kent/Superboy join the titular team in the 32nd century. Bendis and Sook’s Legion of Super-Heroes launched its first issue on Nov. 6, 2019. The series concluded with issue #12 on Jan. 19, 2021.
