Hawkeye directors Bert and Bertie promise that they won’t leave fans hanging “for too long” over the true identity of Maya Lopez’s uncle.
The directors behind Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye on have teased that the identity of Maya Lopez’s mysterious uncle will revealed very soon.
In Hawkeye, Alaqua Cox plays Maya Lopez, a deaf woman who leads the Tracksuit Mafia’s gang of thugs. In the third episode of the series, titled “Echoes,” viewers learned that Maya was orphaned when Ronin killed her father. With nobody else in her life to look after her, Maya was taken in by the head of the Tracksuit Mafia’s parent organization, who she refers to only as “uncle.”
However, since Maya’s uncle was yet to appear on camera, the character’s true identity has remained a mystery to fans. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Hawkeye directors Bert and Bertie explained that viewers will get the answers they’re looking for, even if they have to wait to get there. Bert said, “[The filmmakers at] Marvel are experts are [sic] teasing things in their shows… But they never leave you hanging… For too long.”
In the comics, Maya goes by the codename Echo. Like her Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart, her father died when she was young. Unfortunately, Echo had no surviving family members to look after her. Instead, Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime, adopted Echo and trained her to be an elite fighter. Eventually, Fisk manipulated Echo into fighting Daredevil, who he had framed for her father’s death. When Echo found out the truth, she rebelled against her would-be father figure, becoming a vigilante before joining the Avengers as the original Ronin.
Given the character’s comic book connections to Kingpin, many watchers suspect that Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk will be revealed as Maya’s uncle in Hawkeye. The actor has expressed interest in reprising his Daredevil role on numerous occasions and regularly teases fans on Twitter when asked about his potential involvement with Hawkeye. Recently, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige mentioned that Daredevil‘s Charlie Cox will portray Matt Murdock in the character’s future on-screen appearances, causing some to assume that D’Onofrio will show up on Hawkeye. However, since Feige didn’t say when Daredevil would pop back up, there’s no conclusive evidence to connect D’Onofrio to the role of Maya’s uncle.
Regardless of what her family tree looks like, it’s clear that Alaqua Cox has a bright future in the MCU. Cox will reprise the role of Maya Lopez in a forthcoming Echo spinoff series on Disney+. Feige says that the events of Hawkeye directly inform the plot of Echo, with Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld rumored to reprise their respective roles as Clint Barton and Kate Bishop in the upcoming series.
New episodes of Hawkeye arrive Wednesdays on Disney+.
