Hawkeye Directors Explain Why They Delayed Yelena’s Reveal

Hawkeye co-director Bert explains why she and her directing partner Bertie held off on revealing Black Widow’s Yelena Belova in the show.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the first five episodes of Hawkeye, streaming now on Disney+.

Hawkeye co-director Amber Templemore-Finlayson, aka Bert, explained why she and her directing partner Bertie (Katie Ellwood) waited to reveal Black Widow character Yelena Belova in the Disney+ series.

While speaking to BuzzFeed, Bert gave her and Bertie’s reason behind keeping Yelena out of the show until the fourth episode, “Partners, Am I Right?”  “Obviously, it was like, how long can we delay the reveal of Yelena?” she said. “That was very important to us. You know this is a Widow, but the big reveal that it’s Yelena is so satisfying. We loved having such an amazing woman kick Jeremy’s — I mean, Clint’s — ass. So that was really fun because they are each dangerous in their own way. Yelena and Maya [Lopez/Echo] match his ability, so it was fun to see that four-way fight.”

Prior to this, Bert had also discussed actor Florence Pugh’s willingness to do her own stunts. Pugh, of course, plays Yelena in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “There was this one moment where we were going to swap out Florence with a stunt person and she was like, ‘I can do that.’ And she did it and it was incredible,” Bert stated. “Having actors that are so able and so capable and so willing to be part of the physicality of it means that we can keep my cameras on them for longer and keep the audience in the action for longer. So, it was a gift to us.”

As revealed by the post-credits scene of Black Widow, Yelena was told to kill Clint Barton by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, as Yelena believes that the Avenging Marksman is at fault for Natasha Romanoff’s death in Avengers: Endgame. In regards to said scene, series creator and showrunner Jonathan Igla recently revealed that Hawkeye‘s writers did not know about it, as he was instructed by Marvel Studios President/Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige not to tell them.

“There was a length of time where I wasn’t supposed to share it with the rest of the writing staff. There were a handful of things like that, which was challenging,” Igla commented. “I did my best. I like to think that I’m an honest broker and if somebody tells me not to share something, even if I think, ‘Well the writing staff really needs to know this,’ then I’m just going to trust their process …. I kept it under my hat for awhile.”

Of course, Yelena is not the only problem to plague Clint Barton and Kate Bishop. Not only do the heroes have to contend with the vengeful Maya, whose father was killed by Clint when he was Ronin, but Daredevil’s archenemy Kingpin was confirmed in the most recent episode of Hawkeye.

The series finale of Hawkeye airs Wednesday on Disney+.
