Hawkeye Directors Celebrate One Star as ‘Batsh– Crazy’

Directors Bert and Bertie discuss the latest Hawkeye cast member reveal and the actor’s fearlessness in filming a climactic fight scene.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Hawkeye Episode 4, “Partners, Am I Right?” which aired Wednesday on Disney+.

Directors Bert and Bertie had a lot of praise to give to Florence Pugh after her character Yelena Belova debuted on Hawkeye.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the directing duo discussed bringing Pugh into the series after her first appearance in Black Widow. “Watching her decision-making and being really brave with the character not only was inspiring, but also just a lot of fun,” said Bert. “What’s great about her is she’s batsh*t crazy. She’s like us!”

Bertie clarified that working with Pugh was very much a collaborative process. “For instance, we’d chosen a certain outfit for her to wear, but she was like, ‘I get that. But also, this is Yelena we’re talking about,'” the director said. “She was so good at choosing things for great reasons.”

In Black Widow‘s post-credits stinger, Yelena was visited by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who told the Widow that Clint Barton was responsible for Natasha Romanoff’s death in Avengers: Endgame. “Partners, Am I Right?” picks up that story thread, as Yelena attacks Clint and Kate Bishop while they attempt to steal an enigmatic wristwatch from Maya Lopez/Echo, leading to a four-way battle between all the various players.

Bert said that while shooting the episode’s fight scene, every participant had a different motivation — something they worked hard to make clear in the finished product. “We always believe a fight scene is so much stronger when there’s a story running through it,” she explained. Bertie added, “It was about being in the moment with the characters,” and described how they deliberately worked to ramp up the pacing of the fight as it went on, which in turn amplified “that confusion from Clint’s point of view.”

The directors were eager to praise all four actors for their capability and commitment in performing stunts in the fight. In addition to Jeremy Renner loving “being involved in it” and the stunt team being “quite surprised” by what Hailee Steinfeld could do, Bert explained, “there was this one moment where we were going to swap out Florence with a stunt person and she was like, ‘I can do that.’ And she did it, and it was incredible.”

“Having actors that are so able and so capable and so willing to be part of the physicality of it means that we can keep my cameras on them for longer and keep the audience in the action for longer,” Bert concluded. “So, it was a gift to us.”

New episodes of Hawkeye stream every Wednesday until Dec. 22 on Disney+.
