In the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the audience didn’t get to know Clint Barton very well. Hawkeye might have been there with a quip or two, but his character didn’t get fleshed out until Avengers: Age Of Ultron started to expand his backstory. Now, with the Hawkeye series on Disney Plus, the Avenger with the least super “powers” is in the spotlight again.
Not only does Hawkeye have some great one-liners in his MCU appearances, but he’s also got a lot of great quotes that tease just what’s to come with his character. Surprisingly, he’s even pretty good at inspiring his teammates with speeches, much like Captain America.
10 “Better Call It, Coulson. I’m Starting To Root For This Guy.” (Thor)
Though Hawkeye gets his first storyline in The Avengers, he makes his first MCU appearance in Thor. Stationed in his “nest” up above Mjolnir’s landing spot in Nevada, he keeps an eye on things for Nick Fury and Phil Coulson. Hawkeye appears to be a good agent, not making any moves until he’s told to, but his sarcastic nature peeks through in this line.
As he watches Thor tear through S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to get to his hammer, the Asgardian earns Clint’s respect before they ever officially meet. Being impressed by Thor’s strength and determination is what gets this line out of Hawkeye.
9 “You And I Remember Budapest Very Differently.” (The Avengers)
Hawkeye and Black Widow’s friendship is one of the best ways his character is slowly fleshed out over his movie appearances. It’s Hawkeye being controlled by Loki that gets Natasha to join up with the future Avengers in the first place, after all. Once the two are reunited, they reminisce about a mission in Budapest.
Their exchange about Budapest would be one that would prompt many a fan debate until the details of that particular mission were revealed in the Black Widow movie. Regardless, the banter between the two would become a hallmark of his character, something that carried over from the Hawkeye comics.
8 “Really? I Retired For, What, Like Five Minutes?” (Captain America: Civil War)
As the only member of the Avengers with a wife and children for the majority of his time in the MCU, Clint Barton has a life outside of being a superhero. He even tries to retire to live that life prior to the events of Captain America: Civil War. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last long as he’s pulled out of retirement when Steve Rogers asks him for help.
When Clint goes to retrieve Wanda Maximoff from the Avengers compound, he finds Vision willing to forcibly restrain him. Clint isn’t entirely up to speed on what’s going on with the rest of the team at first, which is what prompts this reaction from him during the altercation. Wanda has to defend him and stop Vision from hurting them both, and things only get worse for Clint from there.
7 “As Much As I Hate To Admit It, If We’re Gonna Win This One, Some Of Us Might Have To Lose It.” (Captain America: Civil War)
When things come to a head between the two groups of Avengers, it’s Hawkeye who realizes that they can’t all escape from the situation easily. As often as he provides fun lines to make the audience laugh, he also makes practical decisions for the group.
Clint stays behind as someone to distract the members of Iron Man’s team so that Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes can get away. Like the rest of the team, he understands that being the distraction likely means getting caught violating the Sokovia Accords, but in the moment, they’re all willing to do it once Clint says it out loud.
6 “You Survived. Half The Planet Didn’t. They Got Thanos. You Get Me.” (Avengers: Endgame)
When Clint takes on the Ronin persona following Thanos’ Snap, he does it to take on the criminal underworld all over the planet. It’s a way for him to bring justice to the half of the planet’s inhabitants left after the Snap.
When Natasha finally tracks him down, this is what he’s saying to one of his targets. He’s brutal and effecient as Ronin, and while the audience might understand his actions, they also haunt him after the fact. Clint doesn’t forget the violent actions he took. Even in Hawkeye, he’s still working through them.
5 “Depends On How Hard You Hit Me.” (Captain America: Civil War)
Hawkeye might be the only one of the Avengers who believes that the fight in Civil War isn’t a permanent schism. While everyone else throws punches and allows their anger to lead them, he doesn’t. He tries to introduce himself to the new heroes, and when Black Widow asks him if they’ll still be friends when it’s all over, he only tells her, “depends on how hard you hit me.”
It’s clearly a joke, and the audience is in on it by that point, but it comes right before Wanda blasts Natasha away from him and admonishes him for pulling his punches. The scene itself makes it clear that Hawkeye might be in over his head when he thought he was just helping out one of his friends.
4 “…But If You Step Out That Door, You’re An Avenger.” (Avengers: Age Of Ultron)
The first time the audience really started to see Clint as more than just the guy with the arrows was in Age Of Ultron. Not only did he give the Avengers a safe haven when Ultron got the better of them in a fight, but he also managed to give a new recruit a pep talk to get her out of her head.
Clint managed to get Wanda to stop focusing on her own guilt and fear long enough to help her realize that she could help people by becoming an Avenger instead of one of the bad guys. Something similar likely happened with Natasha when the two first met as well. Clint’s early interactions with Wanda are his first steps toward being the dad-friend of the Avengers.
3 “The City Is Flying, We’re Fighting An Army Of Robots, And I Have A Bow And Arrow. None Of This Makes Sense.” (Avengers: Age Of Ultron)
Since his first Avengers team-up, fans have thought that Hawkeye didn’t exactly fit in with his superhero teammates. After all, the team is made of super-soldiers, alien beings regarded as gods, and those who have advanced technology to aid them in the fight. Hawkeye has a bow and arrow and his S.H.I.E.L.D. training.
Even Hawkeye recognizes how ridiculous that is in Age Of Ultron. He sees the humor in trying to stop an advancing army of Ultron’s robots with bows and arrows, but that doesn’t mean he stops trying either. He works with what he has, which is part of what makes him such a relatable Avenger.
2 “Under Different Circumstances, This Would Be Totally Awesome.” (Avengers: Endgame)
One of the great things about Hawkeye is his appreciation for just how different his life has become since becoming an Avenger. He might be involved in dangerous battles and experience a lot of grief, but he also has moments of pure wonder, like his trip to Vormir in Avengers: Endgame.
When he and Black Widow are admiring the vast universe outside the ship, he acknowledges how amazing the experience should be for them. If only they weren’t on their way to get the Soul Stone to battle Thanos.
1 “I Fought Thanos.” (Hawkeye)
Out of context, it sounds like Clint Barton is just making a statement of fact with, “I fought Thanos.” That’s not the case though, as this line is one of the cheekier moments from the two-hour premiere of the Hawkeye series on Disney Plus.
Clint has to do something he never thought he would do in order to retrieve his Ronin suit: engage in a Live Action Role Play session in New York. Before he does, he reminds himself that he’s the kind of fighter people look up to. He’s done the unimaginable in going up against Thanos with the other Avengers. In his everyday life though, that doesn’t necessarily matter.
