Everyone in Class 1-A has at least one unique ability except for Sero. Many MHA characters can do what he does but better, so should he be there?
Part of My Hero Academia‘s appeal is its diverse and unique power system. Each person with a Quirk has their own individual ability that no one else has. There is no limit to the abilities a Quirk may give a person. It could be something devastatingly powerful, bizarrely over-complicated or perplexingly strange. This keeps the series interesting, as the audience never knows what new power will be revealed.
Even if a Quirk isn’t all that powerful, it can still be useful in certain situations because no one else can do that exact thing. However, this idea doesn’t seem to apply anymore to Hanta Sero. The Class 1-A student’s Quirk, Tape, allows him to fire strips of tape from his elbows. He can use this tape to capture opponents and swing across long distances. The Quirk has its uses, but so many other characters have similar abilities that Sero feels a lot less special. Numerous other characters can do exactly what Sero can with either their Quirk or a support item. Some of them can even do it better than him.
Tsuyu Asui’s Tongue
The green-haired heroine’s Quirk gives her a frog-like appearance and abilities. She can jump great distances, stick to walls and stretch out her tongue multiple meters long. Tsuyu’s tongue is extraordinarily strong. She can support her own body weight with it and carry other people as well.
Tsuyu can mimic almost all of Sero’s abilities with her tongue alone. She can attach her tongue to a building or other object and use it to swing herself through the air. This gives her the same level of maneuverability as Sero. She can also wrap her tongue around an opponent and restrain them as Sero does. Because she can do what Sero does in addition to her other frog abilities, Tsuyu is useful in far more situations than Sero.
Ochaco Uraraka’s Grappling Hook
After Deku lost control of his new Quirk, Uraraka decided that she needed a new upgrade for her hero suit. She decided to add a grappling hook to her suit that she can fire from her wrist. With the grappling hook, Uraraka can control her direction and momentum while she’s floating in the air with her Quirk. Overall, the device makes her far more mobile than she was before.
Because Uraraka’s grappling hook is a support item, it has advantages over Sero’s Quirk. If Sero overuses his Quirk, his skin becomes dry and he can’t continue to produce the tape. Uraraka’s device is not part of her body, so she doesn’t have to worry about overworking it. She can continue to use the device indefinitely as long as it doesn’t break. This means she can fight far longer than Sero.
Hitoshi Shinso & Shota Aizawa’s Scarfs
Aizawa’s iconic scarf is actually a support item called the Capturing Weapon. Aizawa developed his own fighting style around the item, which allows him to immobilize enemies and propel himself through the air. The scarf can also grab large objects and hurl them at his opponents. When Aizawa began tutoring Shinso, he taught him this fighting style. Although Shinso isn’t as proficient with the scarf as Aizawa, he is rapidly growing in skill.
The Capturing Weapon has one major advantage over Sero’s tape. The scarf is made out of extremely durable material, so it’s highly resistant to being destroyed or cut. Conversely, Sero’s tape can be broken or cut with enough force applied to it. Todoroki was able to easily destroy Sero’s tape with his ice during the Sports Festival. The durability of Aizawa and Shinso’s scarfs makes it a superior weapon to Sero’s tape. Shinso has been working hard to get into the hero course — maybe he’ll replace Sero in Class 1-A.
Izuku Midoriya’s Blackwhip
In addition to the incredible power of One For All, Deku has begun to unlock the Quirks of its previous wielders. The first Quirk he unlocked was Blackwhip from the fifth wielder. This Quirk lets him produce black tendrils made of energy that can be used to bind enemies or improve Deku’s mid-air mobility.
The stockpiling effect of One For All also applies to the other Quirks that Deku unlocks. This means that Blackwhip is much stronger than when the original wielder used it. Blackwhip’s tendrils are not only more resilient than Sero’s tape but also more damaging. Deku can use the tendrils to attack as well as grab objects. During the joint training exercise with Class 1-B, Deku lost control of Blackwhip and caused massive damage to the surrounding area with these tendrils alone.
Sero Still Has His Purpose
Although many other characters can replicate Sero’s powers and some of them can do it better than him, he still has a few tricks only he can do. Sero doesn’t have to be connected to his tape in order for it to be effective. He can leave his tape behind to create barriers or hidden traps. He can also let his allies use his tape for their own purposes. Tsuyu, Uraraka and Deku can’t leave behind their abilities or items. Shinso and Aizawa could leave their scarfs behind as a trap or let an ally use them, but then they would be defenseless without their greatest weapon. Even against tough competition, Sero manages to stand out and secure his place as Class 1-A’s Cellophane hero.
