The Black Knight just showed off how powerful his new throne can be, and it might put him on track to be Marvel’s other King in Black.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Death of Doctor Strange: X-Men/Black Knight #1, available now from Marvel.
Dane Whitman’s introduction to the MCU may have been as a minor player in Eternals, but his role in the comics just keeps getting bigger. Recent years have seen the Black Knight overcome all manner of terrifying threats, and even begin forging a new legacy for his family. In fact, all of these changes have been so great that Dane Whitman has found himself taking on a brand new kind of role from his throne. From the looks of things, he might even be on track to become Marvel’s next King in Black.
When Doctor Strange had his life brought to a gruesome end, those deeply in tune with the mystic forces tied to the Sorcerer Supreme felt his loss almost immediately. In the case of Dane Whitman in The Death of Doctor Strange: X-Men/Black Knight #1 by Si Spurrier, Bob Quinn, Israel Silva, and VC’s Cory Petit, that impact was felt from the seat of the Ebony Siege, the throne he had fashioned from his family’s collection of malevolently enchanted Starstone relics. Thankfully, the Ebony Siege didn’t just inform Dane of the tragedy that had just happened, but also of the danger that came in its wake as the means to coordinate a counterattack while never setting foot on the battlefield for himself. Of all the incredible powers afforded to Dane as the Black Knight, the one that he has made for himself in the Ebony Siege is quickly becoming his most powerful, though he isn’t the first Marvel hero to attain it.
When the symbiote god Knull invaded Earth, he wasted no time showing off just how powerful he was by enveloping the planet in living darkness. Not long after Eddie Brock destroyed Knull and took his place in 2021’s King in Black #5 by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman, the new god of the symbiotes discovered that there was so much more to that role than his predecessor ever knew. Beyond using the other symbiotes connected to the Hive as a means of being effectively omnipresent, Eddie Brock turned towards the experiences and memories shared through it as a way to peer through the past. By pushing those boundaries, Eddie Brock was eventually able to even glimpse the future itself. Although that wasn’t enough to help the King in Black escape a fiery fate, the insights it left him with were invaluable.
The extent to which Dane Whitman’s Ebony Siege could afford him the same powers as Eddie Brock isn’t known, but what the baseline has already been made perfectly clear. The relics which the Ebony Siege was forged from in 2021’s Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade #5 by Simon Spurrier and Sergio Davila already had the ability to let the person wielding them see and venture into other worlds. Once they were combined, however, the Ebony Siege gave whoever sat upon it the power to gaze across all of time. Much like Eddie Brock’s throne, if Dane Whitman decided to delve into the unexplored depths of his own, he could very well succeed where the living god of the symbiotes could not.
The ability to instantly communicate with those closest to him in a time of mystical crisis has already proven to be an invaluable asset in the Black Knight’s heroic journey. If he does decide to take the plunge into what the Ebony Siege can really do, there’s a good chance he will uncover a well of power deeper than he could have possibly imagined. Then again, considering the dark influence that relics such as the Ebony Blade tend to exude, maybe it’s for the best that Dan Whitman sticks to the basics for now.
