Harry Potter: 10 Bravest Characters, Ranked

[ad_1]

It takes a lot of courage to face an insane dark lord who is practically immortal. Fortunately for the characters of Harry Potter, courage isn’t exactly in short supply in the magical world. A staple of House Gryffindor, bravery is a highly desirable trait, encouraged from the very moment students step into the halls of the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.

That isn’t always a good thing as it can be conducive to recklessness. At the same time, it’s very important and it’s the courage of certain characters that ultimately leads to the demise of the Dark Lord. From members of the Order of the Phoenix to Hogwarts students and even magical creatures, many characters display feats of great bravery throughout the books.

10 Draco Malfoy Lies To His Family To Save Harry’s Life

House Slytherin may not be known for their courage, but that’s what makes it so remarkable when a Slytherin is brave. Draco Malfoy is an excellent example. Raised prejudiced and arrogant, he’s an unlikable bully for a large part of the series. After realizing the truth about Voldemort, his outlook on life changes. Unable to make himself kill Albus Dumbledore, Draco nonetheless survives his failure due to Severus Snape’s intervention.

When Harry and his friends are captured by the Snatchers and taken to Malfoy manor, Draco lies to his terrifying aunt Bellatrix, claiming he doesn’t recognize Harry – then slightly disfigured by the Stinging Hex. He is always guided by the desire to protect his family, but he is also brave enough to understand they are wrong. Draco’s is a particularly tricky type of courage but one that is powerful and human.

9 Dobby Challenges The House-Elf Way Of Life So He Can Be Free

The house-elf Dobby may seem terrified of his own shadow and originally tries to hurt himself for perceived offenses to his master, but he’s really one of the bravest characters in the series. Despite the fact that he has to obey the Malfoys, he does his best to warn Harry of Lucius’ plans.

His desire for freedom challenges the way of life of the house-elves, but he embraces it even if it ostracizes him. He dies a free elf in Harry’s arms, but if he’d been a young wizard, he would have definitely gone to the House of the Lion.

8 Fred And George Weasley Have The Courage To Be Themselves

The highly intelligent and resourceful Weasley twins are always an interesting addition to Harry Potter’s adventures. Despite their mother’s insistence, they are determined to go their own way, pursuing their dream to be inventors and owners of a Wizarding joke shop. With Harry’s help, they succeed and become co-owners of Weasleys’ Wizarding Wheezes.

One of the best moments of the series is when Fred and George leave Hogwarts with a beautiful fireworks display, defying the tyranny of Dolores Umbridge. The twins also fight in the Battle of Hogwarts, but Fred pays for his courage with his life.

7 Ron Weasley’s Courage Is Overshadowed By His Jealousy

Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley

As Harry Potter’s best friend, Ron Weasley joins the titular boy wizard in his adventures from his first year at Hogwarts. While not the most studious of young wizards, he excels at chess and comes up with surprising strategies that are an asset to the Golden Trio. Even at a very early age, Ron’s willing to place himself in danger in the game of chess that protects the Philosopher’s Stone.

Unfortunately, it’s not unusual for Ron to be haunted by jealousy and insecurity. He even abandons Harry and Hermione during their Horcrux hunt, when his two friends need him the most. Despite Ron’s flaws, though, he does do his best and has proven his courage on more than one occasion.

6 Hermione Granger’s Bravery Is Only Surpassed By Her Intelligence

Hermione Chamber of Secrets

The brightest witch of her age often seems to have been better suited for Ravenclaw than for Gryffindor, but that doesn’t change the fact that Hermione’s always there for Harry – even when he has seemingly impossible fights to handle. In her first year, she sets Snape’s robes on fire when she thinks he is jinxing Harry’s broom.

In her third year, she stands between Harry and Sirius Black, willing to sacrifice herself for Harry. Despite her grief, she is also brave enough to cast Obliviate on her parents, eliminating their memories of her to keep them safe. If the war had continued, she may have eventually earned the title of bravest witch too.

5 Regulus Black Gives His Life To Destroy The Dark Lord’s Horcrux

Another Slytherin who displays a striking amount of courage, Regulus is raised to honor the pureblood ideals of the Black family and worship Lord Voldemort. He becomes a Death Eater, but soon realizes Voldemort is nowhere near as great as he appears to be.

When Regulus learns about the Dark Lord’s Horcruxes, he sacrifices himself to secure the Slytherin locket. Well aware that he will likely not survive, he instructs the house-elf Kreacher to ensure the destruction of the Horcrux. Even if he doesn’t show up in the series at all, Regulus is memorable through his brave sacrifice.

4 Neville Longbottom’s Timidity Hides The Heart Of A Lion

Harry Potter Neville Longbottom

When the shy Neville Longbottom is first sorted into Gryffindor, many people must have been surprised. They shouldn’t have been, as even at a very early age, Neville proves his courage by confronting his fellow Housemates when they break curfew. That spark of valor becomes a burning flame later in his life.

After Harry leaves Hogwarts, Neville is the one who holds the front, doing his best to protect the students from the Carrows. Neville also kills the Dark Lord’s snake, Nagini, proving he is a true Gryffindor by wielding the sword of the house’s founder.

3 Sirius Black Defies His Family And Escapes Fear Itself

“What’s life without a little risk?” Sirius Black is notable for offering viewers some of the most memorable moments of the franchise. After defying his pureblood family and being sorted into Gryffindor, Sirius is blasted off the Black family tapestry. His friendship with the Marauders is his refuge. While he’s often unkind and occasionally even malicious – particularly with Severus Snape – his bond with his friends is true.

After Peter Pettigrew betrays James and Lily to Voldemort, he is falsely accused of having been the traitor and spends twelve years in Azkaban. He finally escapes when he sees Peter’s animagus form in the Daily Prophet. He is chased down by dementors, fights a werewolf, and confronts Death Eaters, often for the sake of his godson Harry. Sirius’ courage holds of dose of Black madness, but it’s endearing either way. His death is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the series.

2 Harry Potter Is Willing To Die To Keep His Loved Ones Safe

The protagonist, Harry Potter spends most of the series going from one dangerous situation to another. He constantly risks his life to save others, facing monstrous creatures like trolls, basilisks, or dragons. His human opponents are just as terrible. He not only has Voldemort to face, but also the abusive Dursley family and people like Dolores Umbridge.

When Harry learns that he is a Horcrux, he is willing to sacrifice himself to ensure the defeat of Voldemort. Fortunately he survives, and in the final confrontation between the two enemies, Voldemort is defeated by his own spell.

1 Severus Snape’s Love For Lily Potter Gives Him Unsurpassed Courage

The Potions teacher and Head of House Slytherin, Severus Snape isn’t very likable. If there’s anything fans can agree on, though, it’s probably Snape’s courage. Originally a Death Eater, he becomes dedicated to keeping the son of his lost childhood friend alive.

Despite being the target of a werewolf attack in his Hogwarts years, he shields Harry and his friends from that same werewolf – Remus Lupin – with his own body. Snape later becomes a spy for the Order of the Phoenix, despite being aware of just how dangerous it is. He leads a life of sacrifice and tragedy, and in the end, dies in Harry’s arms. Even Harry calls him the bravest man he ever knew.
