Harley’s Weapon Is Better Than the Spear of Destiny

[ad_1]

Harley Quinn may not have the Spear of Destiny, as many fans theorized, but her surprise weapon in The Suicide Squad is even better.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Suicide Squad, now in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.

Ahead of The Suicide Squad‘s release, speculation ran rampant about a shot of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) holding what appeared to be a spear in an early trailer. Some even suggested it could be the Spear of Destiny, which could potentially unite the narratives of The Suicide Squad and the upcoming Black Adam.

That’s not ultimately the case, as the spear turns out to be a far more mundane item in the context of The Suicide Squad. However, it still ends up being essential to the movie’s climactic final battle and the victory of the Suicide Squad, more or less making it a spear of destiny, if not the Spear of Destiny.

Early in The Suicide Squad, the audience is introduced to a wide array of colorful and minor new recruits, including the former Olympian, Javelin (Flula Borg). Like his comics counterpart, Javelin is primarily armed with a javelin — but doesn’t get the chance to prove how deadly he can really be with it before being mortally wounded in the ambush awaiting the Squad on the Corto Maltese beaches. Dying from his wounds, he’s able to bequeath the javelin to one of the only survivors of the attack: Harley, who had flirted with him on the flight to the island. He dies mid-speech, leaving Harley confused about what the actual purpose of the javelin is.

Harley spends the rest of The Suicide Squad trying to make sure she has the javelin with her, and awaits divine intervention to prove why she’s been given it. Luckily, Harley also proves to be very effective in a fight with the weapon. Reacquiring it during her escape from a Corto Maltese prison cell, Harley quickly utilizes it alongside her flexibility and speed to take down a number of guards. Her escape from the cell is the scene featured in the original trailer, still carrying the javelin. Harley continues to use it to great effect for the rest of the movie — including saving her own life multiple times while scrambling to survive the fall of the Jotunheim lab.

At The Suicide Squad‘s climax, she finally realizes its purpose and uses it to jump and cut through Starro’s eye, allowing Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior) to send a horde of rats into the fresh wound. This is crucial for bringing the alien conqueror down once and for all. It’s safe to say that the spear was a crucial tool for Harley during the film. It helped her complete her prison escape, it allowed a nominally powerless woman to survive a collapsing building with relative ease and it even helped her bring down a genuine threat to the entire world.

While Javelin might never have expected his weapon to be so effective, it clearly meant something to him as he handed it over to Harley. And Harley is able to salvage what was beginning to look like a major loss for the Squad — with King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) incapacitated, Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) dead and Bloodsport (Idris Elba) about to be overwhelmed by the legion of Starro-controlled humans. Harley’s actions with the spear-like weapon changed the direction of destiny and helped set up the defeat of a Justice League-level enemy. While it wasn’t what fans expected, Harley did end up having a pretty big role with the weapon in the end.

Watch Harley kick butt with the javelin in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, currently in theaters and on HBO Max.
