With Season 3 of Hanna looming, here’s how the show can create its ultimate killer and the perfect answer to Hanna via sci-fi’s most sinister scheme.
The season two finale of Hanna took a shocking turn with the title character, played by Esme Creed-Miles. She’s returned to the Utrax program and is seemingly back under the thumb of the CIA. However, she’s secretly plotting with her handler, Marissa, to burn it all down from the inside, as they can tell if they stay they’ll end up being terrorists. But while they plot, this month’s Season 3 may actually have a way of creating its ultimate killer and the perfect answer to Hanna via sci-fi’s most sinister scheme: cloning.
Hanna and the girls in the program have been genetically altered: modified to become the deadliest assassins America could dream of. The CIA, via a secret group called the Pioneers, planned to use them under the banner of homeland security, but Hanna was taken away by Erik to kickstart the show. His reasons were noble, as he didn’t want her becoming a monster. However, now that he’s gone, Hanna’s playing this game with Marissa in hopes of truly becoming free, and also liberating the other puppets in what’s essentially Black Widow’s Red Room.
The problem is, the person they launched the coup against, Carmichael, knows they’re up to something. Thus, it’d stand to reason he, or his superiors, would find a secret answer to Hanna by creating their own Hanna. It’s not that ridiculous given how science factors in when making these super-soldiers, and there’s no reason the show can’t go this route. After all, we’ve seen this arc in shows such as Fringe and Orphan Black. Plus, it would create a massive bombshell fans wouldn’t expect.
The revelation that Utrax has copies of Hanna would follow and even surpass the Winter Soldier vibes of the show, especially if her programming is complete. This could present the brainwashed soldier the ideal hunt, going after her rogue self, while proving to viewers Utrax has no limits to how depraved it can get.
It’d make the program the most sadistic ever, adding layers of intrigue as fans would be left wondering what else they’ve been hiding. In addition, an evil Hanna would be a wildcard Hanna and Marissa wouldn’t ever see coming, nor someone they’d be able to figure out. More so, Hanna 2.0 would be their equal, knowing their every move.
This clone saga definitely opens the door to a dream rivalry because they’d have to truly push their mental limits to outdo this twisted copy. Worse yet, if Carmichael gets to impart his knowledge and gets her to be his acolyte, it could be game over as he’s known for gaslighting and conditioning these spies to be savage.
Ultimately, this would fit the narrative, as Hanna needs a test. None of the girls in the program can truly match her, and as Erik warned, their greatest enemy is themselves, so this would make her next challenge quite literal, yet quite lethal.
Hanna Season 3 premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Nov. 24.
