Would Might Guy have preferred to die in the Fourth Shinobi War instead of living the rest of his life in a wheelchair?
At the peak of the Fourth Shinobi War, Madara Uchiha had defeated both Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha. He had also become the jinchuriki for the Ten-Tails. All hope of victory or even survival seemed lost until Might Guy decided to release the Eighth and final Gate. This technique gave Guy an extreme power and speed boost that allowed him to overpower even Madara’s Ten-Tails form, but at the cost of his life. For a brief moment, Guy had become one of the strongest characters to ever exist in Naruto. At the end of his life, Might Guy had proven himself to be the greatest taijutsu master in the world until Naruto returned and saved his life.
The fact that Might Guy didn’t die after opening the Eighth Gate has been a point of contention in the community. Many fans felt that Guy surviving the Eighth Gate takes away a lot of the impact of his sacrifice and strips a satisfying ending away from his character. Might Guy himself would probably agree with this statement as well. The “Power of Youth” has always been a guiding force in his life, and because he survived, that power is forever lost to him.
Might Guy Can No Longer Embody the Power of Youth
A major part of Guy’s character is his obsession with youth and physical strength. He believes that everyone should enjoy their young age and push their bodies to the limit while they’re still in their prime. Guy prides himself on his strength and constantly trains so that he can meet his full potential. The injuries he sustained from the Fourth Shinobi War mean he can no longer do that.
Even though Naruto saved Guy’s life, his right leg was still destroyed from the attack he performed on Madara. Guy has been confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Although Guy can still move around quite well and defeat lower-level enemies, he will never be a fully active ninja again.
Surviving the Eight Gates also means that Guy has to live out his worst fear: the loss of his youth. Might Guy is far past his prime now, and his youth is gone. Because he is no longer a ninja, that means he can’t go out in a blaze of glory. Every day, he has to wake up and watch himself get older as his body gets weaker. The aspects that Might Guy most enjoyed about his life are gone.
Might Guy Has Achieved All of His Dreams
It had always been Might Guy’s goal to prove that he could be a great ninja solely through hard work. He trained every day of his life, perfecting his taijutsu. Guy also wanted to prove that he was better than his lifelong rival, Kakashi. Guy would challenge Kakashi to competitions of strength, speed and luck. He kept track of his wins and losses so that he always knew how he compared to Kakashi. When Guy opened the Eighth Gate, he achieved all of these goals.
When Madara and Guy fought each other during the war, he was greatly impressed by Guy’s skills and strength. Madara publicly declared Guy the greatest taijutsu master to ever exist. At that moment, Guy had accomplished his primary goal in life. He had surpassed Kakashi as well. While the Eight Gates were open, no one could deny that Guy had attained everything he had ever hoped for.
Now, those dreams are done. Guy is no longer the strongest taijutsu master in his current state. Many other characters, including Kakashi, could beat Guy in a fight relatively easily. He can no longer challenge Kakahi to competitions as he did before. With each new generation, Guy must watch a group of taijutsu specialists grow and surpass him.
Might Guy Almost Died Like His Father
Might Guy’s father, Might Duy, was the biggest inspiration in his life. Duy taught him about the power of youth and trained him to be a taijutsu master. Might Duy even sacrificed his life to save his son when Guy was being attacked by the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist. Duy opened all Eight Gates, giving Guy enough time to escape. For most of his life, Guy has attempted to emulate his father.
During his fight with Madara, Guy had his moment to die in the same heroic way as his father. He was going to sacrifice his life to save his friends and a student that he saw as a son. Lee’s last memory of Guy would have been his master being a perfect example of the power of youth. If Guy could have planned out the way he was going to die, this situation would have been exactly it.
But Guy did not meet his end there. He survived, and now his student has to watch him get weaker with each passing day. Lee still has a high level of respect and admiration for Guy, and he would never think less of Guy for being confined to a wheelchair. Despite this, the fact that Guy couldn’t leave Lee with a powerful last memory likely bothers him.
Now that his youth is gone, it would be interesting to see Guy struggle accepting this fact. His previous life and goals are no more, so he must find a new drive for himself. There is a lot more of Might Guy’s character that could still be explored.
