By utilizing their powers in concert with a massive weapon, the Guardians of the Galaxy just unleashed their strongest attack yet.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #18, on sale now
The Guardians of the Galaxy are among the most powerful forces in the Marvel Universe, with their roster counting demigods like Hercules and elemental forces like Star-Lord and Groot among their number. But when they work together — and fully weaponize one of their member’s abilities — they can create one of Marvel’s single most powerful weapons.
Guardians of the Galaxy #18 by Al Ewing, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and VC’s Cory Petit sees the titular team finally utilize their most powerful weapon against Dormammu, ending the “Last Annihilation” with an explosive Nova-powered shot to the head.
Last Annihilation has seen the universe unite against the invasion of Dormammu from the Dark Dimension. With the sheer scope of his armada overtaking many planets, a desperate plan has been hatched by the expanded Guardians of the Galaxy. The plan to stop Dormammu ends up involving two distinct groups working in tandem while their allies hold Dormammu’s forces at bay: Doctor Doom and some of the Guardians provide a means to drain the powers of the Dark Dimension’s dark lord, weakening him for a short window. Meanwhile, Rocket Raccoon, Cable, and S.W.O.R.D. find a way to transform a Breakworld weapon into one of the most powerful tools in the Marvel Universe: a gun capable of taking out planets if used properly.
In Guardians of the Galaxy #18, the plan goes into action — Doctor Doom is able to craft a cosmic pentagram to funnel power from figures like Star-Lord, Moondragon, Drax, and Groot, giving him the potential to drain the energies of Dormammu and severely weaken the mystical force (and secretly greatly empower himself in the process). He then teleports Star-Lord to the same ship carrying Gamora and Rocket — aka the massive cannon, which has been adjusted by S.W.O.R.D to fire a bullet made out of Mysterium, the powerful (anti-magic) substance mined by the mutants of Krakoa. With Star-Lord’s control over the elements powering the cannon and fueling it, Nova is able to combine it with the full potential of the Nova Force — effectively turning himself into the firing mechanism of a giant gun.
Having turned himself into a living weapon with so much power, Nova is able to then hit a giant Mysterium bullet with enough force for it to reach lightspeed instantaneously while it’s aimed by Gamora — and shoot it at Dormammu’s skull before he can regain his mystical powers to defend himself. The bullet is more than enough to blast through his makeshift head, banishing a weakened Dormammu back to his Dark Dimension while seemingly reducing the remains of Ego the Living Planet to an asteroid belt in the Spartax System. And it did all that in a single shot.
It’s one of the most impressive weapons in the Marvel Universe, and more or less turns Nova into a living weapon. With the cannon, the team is effectively able to do more damage to Dormammu in one attack than someone like Doctor Strange has ever really been able to muster in his long career of fighting against the villain. It means that future conflicts and threats can also be dealt with in such a manner — meaning the Guardians have effectively gained an ultimate trump card in times of emergency. The issue even hinted Gamora could gain control over magics, which would allow her to fill Doctor Doom’s role in the circuit.
It also serves as a reminder of just how powerful something like the Nova Force really is, with Richard Rider providing the ultimate spark that’s used to bring down one of Marvel’s single greatest threats. Using Nova as the spark that ignites the cosmic-sized gun, the Guardians of the Galaxy now have a method to deal with cosmic forces that otherwise overshadow almost any other element in the universe.
