In Guardians of the Galaxy, one hero just raced across the universe in a heartbeat, proving why he’s Marvel’s fastest star, even with a shortcut.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #16, now available from Marvel.
As the eruption of Dormammu on the far side of the Galaxy kicks off “The Last Annihilation,” the Marvel Universe has found itself in a state of crisis. However, the Guardians of the Galaxy have found themselves split across the universe. And as soon as he gets word of what’s going on, Nova has just sped through the galaxy in record time, reminding Star-Lord why he was called the Human Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy #16, by Al Ewing, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee and Cory Petit.
From the now-former body of Ego the Living Planet, Dormammu emerged from the Dark Dimension with countless waves of Mindless Ones. While several Guardians were already on the scene, Star-Lord and Nova were attending to business on Mars, where mutants have just formed the Arakko colony. As soon as they get the call, the heroes spring into action in their own ways. Peter Quill gets in touch with the mutants of S.W.O.R.D. and their other allies to ask for backup. However, Richard Rider sets himself ablaze with the Nova Force’s full power and proves why he’s Marvel’s fastest hero by traveling from one end of the universe to another in minutes.
Richard Rider has had a long time to get acquainted with his powers since he first received them back in 1976’s Nova #1 by Marv Wolfman and John Buscema. As host to the Nova Force in its entirety, he has been gifted with superhuman strength, a regenerative healing factor, and the kind of speed that few could ever imagine.
Rider accesses the total Nova Force before rocketing into space, creating a wormhole, and flying through that to the site of the action. Through his speed and wormhole-creating tech, Nova traversed the universe and arrived in the farthest reaches of space in moments.
While Nova’s concerns are far more heavily weighted towards saving Gamora and Rocket Raccoon, this isn’t the first time Nova has used his speed to confront an annihilation-level threat. During 2006’s Annihilation crossover, Nova put his speed to good use battling the Annihilation Wave across the universe, much as he had used it to traverse the spaces between planets in an instant as a celestial peace officer for years. Nova’s superspeed has even gotten him into serious trouble as witnessed in 2007’s Nova #4 by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, Sean Chen and Brian Denham. When Nova was on the run from the Phalanx, he mistakenly flew into the Phalanx Wall at full speed, nearly killing himself in the process.
However, Nova survived his prior experiences and has apparently learned enough from it to ensure he could get to his fellow Guardians of the Galaxy safely in their current moment of need.
Outside of potentially the Silver Surfer and other cosmic begins, there aren’t many Marvel characters who can cover that much space in as short a time as Nova did here. And now, the fate of the Marvel Universe may very well rest on how fast Nova can rally the rest of Marvel’s cosmos into action.
