Guardians of the Galaxy #16 recreates one of the most iconic and romantic moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe…with a major twist.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #16, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
One of the most romantic moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe came in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy film when Peter Quill saved Gamora. Nebula found them on Knowhere and with Ronan’s fleet helping her on Thanos’ quest to retrieve the Orb, she blasted Gamora’s pod in orbit leaving her ‘sister’ freezing to death in outer space. Luckily, Star-Lord arrived in time to save her, and now in Al Ewing, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and VC’s Cory Petit’s Guardians of the Galaxy #16, that scene has been recreated with a major twist.
In the MCU, Peter Quill was head over heels in love with Gamora. He flew out of his pod and risked his life, giving her his oxygen mask to breath. Yondu’s fleet would arrive and rescue them, with Quill then reviving Gamora aboard the flagship. This showing of unselfish love became one of the most iconic scenes in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe and was one of the major components in developing the dynamics of their budding relationship.
This scene is mimicked on the comic book page when Ego is turned into a dark shell, hatching to cause Dormammu to be reborn. The demonic cosmic entity returns from the Dark Dimension, bringing with him an army of Mindless Ones who proceed to ruthlessly attack the Guardians of the Galaxy. Moondragon sends word to Quill and Nova, light years away, with the latter turning into a “human rocket” again and rushing to the aid of his teammates at unprecedented speeds.
With Gamora and Rocket Racoon’s ship blown to bits, they’re both left floating in space. But Nova is able to rescue them in time, creating an atmospheric bubble around them just in time to save their lives. This leads to a borderline romantic moment between Nova and Gamora, that leaves their teammate Rocket understandably uncomfortable.
As the team reconvenes to plot a new strategy moving forward, it seems like Nova and Gamora may be reigniting their previous romance. She and Nova (aka Rich Rider) were a couple before she ended up with Quill, but as this run revealed, Nova got caught up in duty, causing their rift. With the PTSD he was suffering, all he knew was war, not understanding selflessness and emotions when it came to love. Gamora acknowledged that in the past they weren’t healthy for each other back then as she too was immature, but now, it seems like that toxicity is now gone.
It is possible that this might ignite a love triangle with Star Lord, as Quill was recently involved with Gamora. But her trying to kill Thanos and then Peter running off for a long time to become a cosmic god derailed their momentum. As Master of the Sun, he fell in love and had a child in another realm, so he seems to have moved on. Ironically, before Nova took off to rescue Gamora, he and Quill were discussing the women in their lives.
Pete seems interested in rekindling a romance with Kitty Pryde at the moment, so Rich might have the all-clear to resume his relationship with Gamora. With both Guardians in a far better place mentally than they have been in quite a while, there’s no better time to explore the possibility of a loving relationship once again.
