During a Suicide Squad watch party, writer and director James Gunn confirmed that screen tests have begun for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Writer and director James Gunn teased that the next step of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s production has begun.
During last night’s watch party for The Suicide Squad on Twitter Spaces, star Steve Agee, who also appeared in Vol. 2 of the Marvel franchise, joked about Gunn’s unique approach to directing. “One thing you don’t wanna hear James say is ‘One more time,’ ’cause that usually means about 100 more times,” Agee said.
“I irritate myself by how often I say one more time,” Gunn said, before confirming that screen tests have begun for the third Guardians of the Galaxy film. “I’m actually doing screen tests today for Guardians 3… and I kept saying “One more time,” and I’m like, these people don’t know me… They don’t know that it means 1000 more times.”
The comment quietly revealed that Guardians 3 has entered the next stage of production after Gunn previously mentioned he was storyboarding the film in June and actor Karen Gillan teased that same month that she was preparing to re-don the Nebula prosthetics. Though Gunn didn’t offer any further details, the film appears to be gathering further talent to join the returning cast members. And as he notes, they’re learning the hard way that Gunn has a particular directing style.
Back in January, reports indicated that Guardians 3 would film later this year in the U.K., though a specific date wasn’t mentioned. While the film is still a year and a half away, the various indications from behind the scenes point to production ramping up soon for the next installment in the franchise. Of course, fans won’t have to wait that long for more from the intergalactic misfits.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will arrive on Disney+ in 2022, and Gunn said it’s essential viewing before seeing the third film. “You know, it’s in-canon,” Gunn said last month. “It’s about the Guardians, you’re gonna learn stuff that you need to learn before you see Vol. 3 and it’s great. I’m really, really happy with it. I’m using a lot of the same sets. Same actors, obviously. So we’re shooting, you know, sort of simultaneous with the film.”
Little is known about the plot of the third film, which will be Gunn’s last, but the director has promised more MCU deaths. Given where Avengers: Endgame left off, however, it’s safe to assume the team will be tracking down the Gamora variant that appeared in that film. And before any other Guardians installments, fans will see most of the crew in Thor: Love and Thunder next year.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.
