Following what many may consider to have been a disastrous launch, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition is one of the lowest user-reviewed games of all time.
According to Metacritic’s rankings, GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition sports a User Score of just 0.5 out of 10, aggregated from 2903 ratings at the time of writing. This is low enough that the remastered collection of the PlayStation 2 classics is now the fourth worst user-reviewed game of all time. The only titles that managed to acquire a lower score are Madden NFL 21, World of Warcraft Classic: Burning Crusade and Madden NFL 22. This also means that GTA: The Trilogy is the third-worst reviewed game of 2021.
Many user reviews echo similar sentiments, with fans upset at the general lack of quality seen in the Definitive Edition. Players are criticizing the poorly optimized graphics, which often use textures that seem unnatural and awkward in comparison to the dated visuals of the original releases. Others are pointing to the updated animations resulting in glitchy character models, while the improved weather effects, especially rain, often make it nearly impossible to navigate the city. The games are also rife with bugs which, while occasionally humorous, make the $60 USD pricetag difficult to justify for many players.
One of the most common complaints is how Rockstar Games handled the release of GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition. A few weeks before the collection launched, the developer delisted all the original games from various digital storefronts, essentially forcing the Definitive Edition on players who may not already own Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas.
Many players are drawing comparisons to a variety of other botched video game launches, with users often citing Warcraft 3: Reforged and Cyberpunk 2077. Both games, which launched in 2022, were notorious for their poor performance on both PC and console, with many promised features never making it into the final build.
Beyond the reviews, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition struggled even on launch day. The PC version of the collection was delisted after just a few hours due to issues with the Rockstar Launcher. Since the app is the only way to launch the PC version of the game, players were unable to access the GTA: The Trilogy for over 24 hours. This iteration of the game is once again available alongside the versions on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.
