In the wake of rumors that Rockstar Games is developing a remastered version of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy, more sources confirm its existence.
Various sources confirmed that Rockstar Games is in the process of remastering Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy.
As indicated by Kotaku, who cites three sources close to the project, the remaster of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy is in the final stages of development. These updated versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas will feature a combination of “new and old” graphics, achieved through Unreal Engine.
One of Kotaku’s sources states that the remastered versions of the game resemble “a heavily-modded version of a classic GTA title.” All three titles will feature gameplay that stays true to the PlayStation 2 classics while sporting an updated UI that retains the “classic” style of the franchise.
The report states that the remastered Grand Theft Auto trilogy was originally intended to ship as an added bonus for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Grand Theft Auto V. Developer Rockstar Dundee went on to separate the game, anticipating an early 2021 launch. This release window was then changed to late 2021, specifically October or November, for all modern consoles. The PC and mobile versions are expected to release in 2022. The remastered trilogy may only be available as a digital purchase.
Kotaku’s sources also believe that if this remastered version of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy performs well, it may pave the way for more updated versions of classic Rockstar Games.
Rumors that the beloved PS2 Grand Theft Auto titles would receive a fresh coat of paint have been swirling for some time. Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive confirmed that it was working on three unannounced “New Iterations of Previously Released Titles.” While it’s currently unknown if all three of those projects correlate to the three games in the Grand Theft Auto trilogy it’s possible remakes or remasters of other franchises are currently in development.
While there’s still no official confirmation on the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy remaster, fans of the franchise can still look forward to the next-gen versions of GTA V. Launching for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on Nov. 11, this updated version of the game will include “expanded and enhanced” features. Rockstar Games has yet to reveal what those features exactly are but given the looming launch date, more information will likely be shared soon.
