Green Lantern Teases Why Another DC Hero Could Be a Great Yellow Lantern

[ad_1]

Green Lantern hints that some major heroes could make some of the Sinestro Corps’ most impressive Yellow Lanterns if they were so inclined.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Green Lantern #6 and Green Lantern 2021 Annual #1, now on sale

The Sinestro Corps Ring has usually been portrayed as a dangerous force within the greater DC Universe, a cosmic level organization that could set up another galaxy-spanning war if they were so inclined. But the inclusion of their ranks into the United Planets — and a promise to adhere to their authority, at least until Sinestro controls it — has opened up the possibility that some heroes could find a good use for that distinct power.

In Green Lantern #6 by Geoffrey Thorne, Marco Santucci, Tom Raney, Mike Atiyeh, and Simon Bowland, Jo Mullein confronts Sinestro for the first time — and the longtime villain expresses his belief that Mullein would make a formidable member of the Sinestro Corps.

The Green Lantern Corps — or rather, the remnants of the Green Lantern Corps after they lost many of their number and most of their power upon the sudden destruction of the Central Power Battery on Oa — have been trying to discover what happened in the aftermath of that attack. Unfortunately, Earth’s young, unsanctioned Teen Lantern came to the quick conclusion everything was the fault of Sinestro and went to confront him. Previously, Simon Baz (in his new specialized armor) and Jessica Cruz (now a duly appointed Sinestro Corps member) dealt with Keli and kept her from causing any more chaos. Meanwhile, Jo Mullien — who has more or less become the face of the Green Lantern Corps as one of the few active Lanterns — decides now is the time for her to confront Sinestro for the first time.

She quickly catches Sinestro by surprise, thanks to the unique nature of her ring and the expert way she uses it to trap his agents. She also casually reveals what she believes about Sinestro — that he’s a ruthless mass murderer, a gifted tactician, and an unstable warrior. This at least earns a laugh out of Sinestro, who then reveals to Jo that he had nothing to do with the fall of Oa. Jo believes him, and Sinestro, in the name of civility and upholding the United Planets Charter, allows her and her allies to leave New Korugar with no additional problems. In fact, he even reveals that his planet will contribute to the recovery and rebuilding of Oa. He also makes Jo Mullein an offer: when her Green Lantern Ring does eventually lose its full charge, she should come to him — as there will be a Yellow Ring waiting for her.

It’s an interesting proposition, and while not one Jo is clearly considering now, it’s an important thing to remember is on the table for her. Jo’s ability to understand the psychology of her enemies — as she displayed frequently in her debut series, Green Lantern: Far Sector — suggests she would do well by targeting enemies in that manner.

Yellow Lanterns are also being painted in a new light, thanks to Jessica Cruz. Given a Yellow Ring after defeating three Sinestro Corps members on her own with no power, she’s decided to keep the ring — as revealed in Green Lantern 2021 Annual #1 by Ryan Cady, Sami Basri, Tom Derenick, Hi-Fi, and Rob Leigh — and use it to help people in a way that is quite unexpected.

Cruz seems to believe the Yellow Rings can be used for heroic purposes and be wielded well, suggesting there might be a future for the Lanterns by embracing the other parts of the emotional spectrum. Jo is currently positioned to stand tall as the most prominent remaining Green Lantern, especially with her role as a leading member of the Future State Justice League potentially laying ahead of her.
