The official key art for Gotham Knights highlights Red Hood, Nightwing, Batgirl and Robin fighting the city’s crime in Batman’s legendary name.
Warner Bros. Games and DC Comics revealed the official key art for Gotham Knights, the upcoming open-world action game.
The image itself reveals a rain-soaked street in Gotham City. Awash in the purple neon of closed-up businesses, the game’s main characters confidently patrol the night. The art places the Bat-Family of Robin (Tim Drake), Nightwing, Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) and Red Hood front and center, the looming presence of Batman seen glistening the puddle below their boots.
While Batman is (partially) in the image, it’s likely that Bruce Wayne will not appear in Gotham Knights. Revealed at the DC Fandome 2020, developer Warner Bros. Games Montreal confirmed that its latest game will feature the tragic death of Batman. In his stead, his apprentices must rise up and work together to reclaim the streets of Gotham City, which has fallen into the hands of sinister villains celebrating their victory over Batman.
Gotham Knights is a third-person action role-playing game that will see players don the capes of their favorite members of the Bat-Family. Each of the four playable characters will feature unique abilities and powers, such as Robin’s ability to teleport short distances using a Justice League satellite or Red Hood’s long-range weaponry.
When players aren’t exploring Gotham City, they’ll be able to hang out in the Belfry, a base of operations set up by the Bat-Family. From this location, they’ll be able to upgrade their equipment and abilities or switch characters. The entire game can be played either solo or with a friend in co-op.
Not much is currently known about Gotham Knight‘s story beyond its core premise. The brief gameplay teaser released last year shows off the game’s combat system, which will reportedly be different from the Batman Arkham games. It also revealed that iconic villain Mister Freeze will feature as an antagonist alongside the terrifying Court of Owls. More villains are expected to be announced in the near future.
Gotham Knights was initially meant to launch in 2021 but due to complications caused by the ongoing COVID pandemic, the game was delayed to 2022. No specific release date has been confirmed but fans can expect more news on Warner Bros. Game Montreal’s latest project at the DC Fandome 2021 event.
When it does launch, Gotham Knights will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
