Gohan’s showdown with Majin Buu is recreated with devastating ferocity in a dynamic new piece of Dragon Ball Z fan art.
A new piece of Dragon Ball Z fan art showcases the brutal power of Gohan’s Mystic form.
This visceral work was created by French artist Han Gilbert. The painting calls back Dragon Ball Z‘s final saga, when Gohan unleashes his newly awakened Mystic form to put Majin Buu in his place. While Gohan is eventually bested by the voracious villain, his ultimate form has remained a popular subject with fan artists in the decades since its debut.
Gohan’s mysterious Mystic form was first unlocked when the young Saiyan traveled to the Supreme Kai’s planet. The transformation was achieved after 20 hours of training with the lecherous Old Kai, who released Gohan’s full potential as a reward for freeing him from within the Z Sword, which he was imprisoned within for millions of years. The Mystic form has remained one of the Dragon Ball series’ most powerful transformations: when Gohan finally reactivates the form in Dragon Ball Super‘s Tournament of Power arc, it allows him to go toe-to-toe with his father, who has to use both his ability-boasting Kaio Ken technique and the Super Saiyan Blue form to overcome his son’s raw strength.
More of Gilbert’s action-packed art can be seen on the artist’s ArtStation portfolio. In addition to numerous other Dragon Ball works, including an even more brutal illustration of Gohan’s earlier battle with the Cell Juniors, the artist frequently paints the cast of Capcom’s Street Fighter series with an equally dynamic sense of action and impact.
While Dragon Ball Super showed that Gohan had mostly given up on his martial arts training in order to pursue a quieter lifestyle, it appears that Goku’s eldest son will have to flex his powers once again in the series’ next movie, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. A new trailer for the film was released at the latest Jump Festa and suggests the movie will have a heavy focus on Gohan, who is seen battling the movie’s two new villains, the android-like Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. The movie will once again feature the young Saiyan in his Piccolo-inspired Cell Saga outfit, complete with a flowing white cape and purple gi. The half-Saiyan’s daughter, Pan, will also reportedly play a big role in the film’s story, as she has been undergoing martial arts training from Gohan’s former master, Piccolo.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is scheduled to be released in Japan on April 22. While details about the movie’s international release have yet to be announced, the film’s producers previously promised to make the gap between its Japanese premiere and its Western release as short as possible.
