GameStop: Rise of the Players drops its first trailer, highlighting the Reddit community which sent a struggling company’s stock price skyrocketing.
GameStop: Rise of the Players, the documentary chronicling the stock market clash between Wall Street bankers and a small group of passionate investors, dropped its first trailer.
The trailer features an assortment of interviews with the investors who managed to influence the dwindling stock price of video game retailer GameStop, causing a notorious hedge fund to lose millions. Directed by Jonah Tulis, the documentary includes first-hand accounts from users, many of whom were likely inspired by the now notorious subreddit r/wallstreetbets, and the Wall Street bankers who lost millions in the process. The event became one of the most talked-about news stories of 2021, serving as a real-life “David vs. Goliath” story in which individual, small-time investors were able to directly impact major institutions attempting to profit off GameStop’s falling stock.
The story of Wall Street Bets’ and its interest in GameStop became so widespread that government officials were called in to monitor the situation. The brick-and-mortar video game retailer, which has recently fallen on hard times following the popularity of digital distribution methods, was listing stocks at an all-time low, with many hedge funds attempting to drive the price down even further. Noticing this trend, a small collective of Reddit users began buying GameStop stock in bulk, increasing the price exponentially. The movement eventually made its way to mainstream media outlets, prompting more people to invest, driving the price up even more. Many of the original investors were able to clear a substantial amount of money in the process.
Despite only occurring in early 2021, the GameStop day trading fiasco quickly leaped into Hollywood’s spotlight. Beyond GameStop: Rise of the Players, HBO confirmed that it was also developing a TV series based on the drama. This adaption will be helmed by Andre Ross Sorkin, Len Amato and Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions. There’s currently no word on when the HBO documentary will be available but audiences interested in the events will at least be able to catch up with everything they need to know thanks to Rise of the Players. Beyond this, both Netflix and MGM are currently working on scripted movies based on the fiasco.
GameStop: Rise of the Players premiers exclusively in theaters on Jan. 28.
