Game of Thrones is saturated with action and adventure, crime and drama, and war and subterfuge, strong narrative concepts held in place by prodigious world-building. It dazzled audiences from the first episode, maintaining their interest with devious plot twists and complex political interplay.
GoT remains refreshing until the very end, even if a few characters miss their chance at closure. The series suffers from a third-act problem, leading to a much feebler conclusion than was expected from it. However, the show remains an engrossing experience, especially a few key scenes that function as focal points in the characters’ respective storylines—making them patently rewatchable.
10 Jon Snow Is Brought Back To Life Via R’hllor
Jon Snow’s death is devastating because it kills off a fan-favorite character while simultaneously creating an emotional vacuum that can’t be filled so easily. Jon clearly dies after being stabbed repeatedly, which is why his revival by Melisandre—who invokes R’hllor, the Lord of Light—is welcomed with cheer and celebration by the audience.
The story almost makes it seem like her magic fails to work, so Jon’s wheeze back to life is as unexpected as it is miraculous. The precise moment when he opens his eyes lasts all of two seconds, but its impact is monumental.
9 Daenerys “Barters” Drogon In Exchange For The Unsullied
Viewers simply adore Daenerys’ plays for power, and she delivers with every scorching ounce of her being. Her desire for the Unsullied army forces her to offer Drogon in exchange for the warrior-eunuchs, the only bargain that Kraznys mo Nakloz is willing to accept.
What the slave-dealer isn’t aware of is that dragons are fiercely dependent on their mothers, but his confusion over Drogon’s “misbehavior” is resolved when Dany orders her baby to burn Krazyns to cinders. This scene is an incredibly potent display of the versatile skillset possessed by Daenerys Targaryen.
8 Tyrion Slaps The Sass Out Of Prince Joffrey
Tyrion controls his nephew with a firm hand at the beginning of the series, confident enough to physically strike Joffrey without being seriously rebuked by either King Robert or Queen Cersei.
This is why Tyrion delivers three resounding slaps across Joffrey’s face when the latter pompously mocks Bran Stark’s recent injury and refuses to “pay his respects.” Nothing is more pleasurable to Game of Thrones’ audiences than Joffrey getting what he deserves, making this moment an oft-memed one.
7 Viserys Targaryen Is Given The Crown He Deserves
Viserys’ bloated ego is punctured when his little sister manages to secure power beyond his wildest dreams upon her marriage to Khal Drogo. He drunkenly waves his sword around, flouting precious Dothraki traditions with an audacity far beyond his means.
In response, Drogo agrees that Viserys has earned a “golden crown that men will tremble to behold,” before proceeding to empty a cauldron of searing molten gold over the head of the last remaining Targaryen male—until Jon Snow’s revelation, of course. More importantly, however, Viserys’ death signifies the rise of Daenerys Targaryen.
6 Cersei Lannister’s Masterful Move Against A Host Of Enemies
Cersei is ordered to stand trial and be judged by the High Sparrow and his cult of religious fanatics, but Qyburn’s last-second discovery shifts the tides completely in her favor. Instead of attending the ceremony, she wears her best outfit and stands at her balcony, keeping an eye on the Great Sept from a great distance.
It is then revealed that Cersei plans to destroy the entire building and everyone in it with a blast of Wildfire, which is exactly what happens. Her cheeky smile aside, viewers love this scene for its spectacular green fireworks and flying church bells.
5 Joffrey’s Fate At The Purple Wedding
Joffrey has the temperament of a tyrant, but completely lacks the political talents of the world’s best leaders. His despicable actions lead to innocents being framed and executed, such as Ned Stark, and he merrily humiliates Sansa and Tyrion in every possible way he can think of.
Fans have been despising Joffrey more and more since his spat with Arya, so his fate at the Purple Wedding comes as a refreshing surprise. Imagine a character so universally abhorred that their agonizing deaths make viewers ecstatic.
4 Hodor Holds The Door For Bran
One of the saddest moments in the series is when Hodor’s past and future are intertwined by Bran’s warging, revealing the truth behind his unique name—and the only word he can utter.
This complex leakage of consciousness across timelines is a bizarre concept, even for GoT, explaining why audiences can’t stop watching the scene over and over again. The emotional part is, of course, when Hodor sacrifices his life for Bran, as he had known he would for decades.
3 Sansa Sentences Littlefinger To Death
Sansa finally acknowledges the fact that Littlefinger had been using her for a long time after confirming her suspicions using Bran’s Greensight. She forces him to face her in the Great Hall at Winterfell, where she announces that he is on trial for committing several heinous crimes, including murder and collusion with the enemy.
Littlefinger pretends to be in the dark about Sansa’s accusations, faltering when she refuses to believe his lies anymore. Arya then smoothly slices his neck open, leaving him to bleed to death. A fitting end, according to many viewers, for one of the shadiest men in Westeros.
2 Gregor Clegane Kills The Overconfident Red Viper
Oberyn Martell accepts the burden of being Tyrion’s Champion, hoping to avenge the deaths of his sister, niece, and nephew at the brutal hands of the Mountain. At the outset, the Red Viper attacks his opponent from a safe distance, a sensible decision given the latter’s incomprehensible strength and attack power.
Unfortunately, he grows a bit too overconfident, failing to notice Gregor’s surreptitious strike from below. Oberyn is consequently blinded and pulverized, a morbidly fascinating scene that fans just can’t get enough of.
1 Arya Stark Pounces On The Night King
The Night King is completely unfazed by every attack directed at him, even brushing aside a white-hot torrent of dragon flame like it’s a mildly inconveniencing drizzle. His overwhelming power makes him all but invincible as he stridently marches towards his real target: Bran.
It all comes down to Arya Stark, whose incomparable stealth mode allows her to get close enough to the Night King. Despite being blocked, she feints her dagger into her other hand, piercing through the enemy’s “skin” and destroying him forever. The scene takes its time to come to fruition, but the results are absolutely worth it.
