First 4 Figures has made a pretty impressive name for itself thanks to its wide range of highly detailed and super-collectable statues and figurines, and the latest Zelda-related product has just dropped in the Nintendo Life office.
We’ve already sampled the delights of Link and Revali, and now it’s the turn of one of the most iconic items in the entire Zelda universe: the signature Hylian shield which Link takes with him into battle. Outside of the Master Sword, this has to rank as one of the most essential objects in any Zelda outing; emblazoned with the Tri-Force and the Hylian crest, it has arguably become the trademark for the entire series.
First 4 Figures’ take on the shield comes mounted on a plastic stand, which it connects to using a magnet. It doesn’t feel as secure as we’d perhaps like, with the slightest knock causing it to fall off – you might want to make sure you place this out of the reach of young kids, and perhaps in a cabinet where it’s unlikely to be accidentally knocked over.
Outside of that, this is a lovely piece of merchandise; there’s room for an 18,500 capacity 3.7V rechargeable battery (sold separately) in the base of the stand of the ‘Collector’s Edition’ version ($99.99), which causes four orbs on the stand’s feet to illuminate when active. You can also power the stand using a USB-C connection. The standard edition ($69.99) lacks this feature.
On the rear of the shield there’s a handle and more detail, which means it’s great to look at from any angle. However, you’d feel pretty foolish displaying this backwards, because the front of the shield is what everyone wants to see, right? While some might bemoan the fact that it’s not a full-scale replica, this is another fantastic piece of Zelda merch from First 4 Figures – and one which seems to be somewhat easier to track down than some of the company’s other products.
