Fushiguro’s Greatest Weakness Could Actually Help Sukuna

[ad_1]

Chapter 170 of Jujutsu Kaisen exposes a huge weakness in Fushiguro’s Domain Expansion, but Sukuna could make it his greatest weapon.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 170 “Tokyo No. 1 Colony, Part 10,” by Gege Akutami, John Werry and Snir Aharon, available in English from Viz Media.

Fushiguro Megumi’s Domain Expansion, Chimera Shadow Garden, is a frighteningly powerful technique even in its incomplete state. Since he first manifested it in Jujutsu Kaisen, he’s worked on refining it enough to be used easily in battle. The only thing currently differentiating it from a fully-fledged Domain is its lack of a barrier, but that may prove to be Fushiguro’s greatest strength in time.

Since he hasn’t yet perfected his Domain Expansion, Fushiguro only uses it as a last resort. The variety of shikigami at his disposal — as well as his combat skills and near-unlimited stock of cursed tools — make him more than a match for most of the sorcerers he’s encountered so far in the Culling Game. He’s made short work of everyone he’s had to fight so far — until Reggie.

Faced with an opponent who had even more tricks up his sleeve and the ability to regenerate instantaneously, Fushiguro decided to flee the battle rather than lose a war of attrition. What was supposed to be an easy escape on Nue quickly turned into a chase, however, as Reggie pursued him on the ground with a motorcycle and drones he’d conjured up with his Cursed Technique. Realizing he’d have to fight, Fushiguro decided to finally use his ace in the hole — but he had to compensate for its one weakness.

Since he’s always found barrier techniques difficult thus far in Jujutsu Kaisen, Fushiguro decided to forgo the barrier requirement of a Domain. Instead, he ambushed Reggie in a spacious gymnasium, casting Chimera Shadow Garden within it. Rather than creating artificial borders for his domain, he allowed it to occupy the entirety of the gym’s interior, effectively making the entire building his Domain Expansion.

Sukuna casting his Domain Expansion

Casting a Domain using a building’s confines was an ingenious stop-gap but in actuality, Fushiguro might be limiting his own potential. Ryomen Sukuna’s Domain Expansion, Malevolent Shrine, is very similar to the current state of Chimera Shadow Garden. Sukuna’s proficiency at barrier techniques is unknown but his Domain Expansions have never used any, and for very good reason. Domain Expansions are designed to be inescapable; by leaving his foes an escape route, Sukuna’s Domain enters a binding contract that increases the radius within which its effects are felt, and strengthens the Cursed Technique that’s active inside it.

The exact requirements for creating a Domain Expansion like Malevolent Shrine remain a mystery, but they would likely be no problem for Fushiguro. As he’s proven over and over in Jujutsu Kaisen by his versatile use of the Ten Shadows Technique, the only limit on Fushiguro’s power is his imagination. Recently, he seems to have taken Gojo Satoru’s tip about imagining a stronger future version of himself to heart. At the rate he’s growing in power, it won’t be a question of if he’ll replicate Malevolent Shrine’s quirk once he hears about it, but when.
