An exclusive preview of Patrick Kindlon and Marco Ferrari’s Frontiersman features a retired superhero being recruited to fight climate change.
What happens when a retired superhero is coaxed out of retirement to become a company spokesperson? Readers will soon find out in Frontiersman, an Image Comics title by Patrick Kindlon and Marco Ferrari.
CBR has an exclusive preview of Frontiersman #1, which follows our protagonist as he lives out in the wilderness. Even though he’s out of the superhero business, he’s being recruited for his positive views on social issues while going through a piece of junk armor for spare parts. When Pacific redwoods are being cut down at the President’s behest, a group of environmentalists ask Frontiersman to stand with them against the government to save the trees.
“Frontiersman is a story about coming back to what you love, even if you’re not sure it’s for you anymore. And even if you’re not sure anyone wants you there!” Kindlon said. “We promise there’s big action throughout Frontiersman, but we wanted to show off some pages that show the other side of the series: character-first, fun, and unashamed. These pages are crucial to the first arc and leave our protagonist with a choice: dip a toe back in those waters that used to excite him so much, or stay happily retired? If you love superheroes but feel like corporate mandates have sapped some of the flavor from those characters, Frontiersman is your new title. Thanks for giving it a shot. We won’t let you down.”
“We believe comics are made by characters that live and breathe through the panels with their acting and actions. In these pages our hero doesn’t look super at all as we see his daily life routine,” Ferrari said. “After years giving to the community sporting his Davy Crockett shaped helmet and his wolf club, he has decided to retire and live in the nature he loves. He keeps his glasses on his neck, drinks his herbal tea before bed, recycles scrapped parts for his cabin upkeep. Does he really wanna get involved in what seems nothing but a celebrity endorsement? Does he really have something to say at these times? More importantly: Does his worn costume fit him again? Frontiersman is a book where we poured our most genuine love for comics and wanted to share it with you.”
Frontiersman #1 goes on sale Sep. 22 from Image Comics.
