With the Secret Invasion series in the works, let’s dive into how Fox’s Fantastic Four already gave fans Marvel’s most powerful Skrull.
One of the most shocking aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Captain Marvel was how the Skrulls were introduced. Many assumed the shape-shifting aliens would be infiltrating Earth for sinister purposes, wreaking havoc for their empire. However, they were revealed to be refugees seeking a new home after Kree oppression. But with a Secret Invasion series on the way, it’s worth noting that Fox’s Fantastic Four already gave fans Marvel’s most powerful Skrull — sort of.
It came in The Rise of the Silver Surfer when Johnny Storm gained the ability to harness all his teammates’ powers. This mimicked Kl’rt, the Super-Skrull who was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the ’60s to be a deadly antagonist to Reed Richards and Co. In that book, Emperor Dorrek used his scientists to alter Kl’rt, who was given the combined abilities of the Fantastic Four.
In Kl’rt’s case, his powers were stronger, and with his hypnotic abilities, he was meant to prep Earth for an invasion in the most perfect way, something Reed’s team foiled repeatedly. While the alien’s fought them and the Avengers over the years, Kl’rt’s now part of an intergalactic coalition in the comics along with the Guardians of the Galaxy keeping the peace. However, as fans wait to see if the MCU will make him an outright villain at a time when the Skrulls are sympathetic, it’s still possible to get the idea of what he can do from when Johnny fought Doctor Doom.
In that film, Johnny’s interaction with the Silver Surfer altered his molecules, allowing him to absorb his teammates’ powers. While it engendered them at first, Johnny wised up when Doom stole the Surfer’s board and summoned Galactus to the planet. With Sue dying, they clasped hands and transferred their abilities to Johnny, who used his sister’s invisibility to sneak up on Doom. He then turned his hands into rock like the Thing, set himself ablaze using his Human Torch abilities and stretched out like Reed before punching Doom and flying around the Big Apple.
It’s very similar to what Super-Skrull would do, but in the film, Johnny’s more heroic than terrifying and about saving the world, not controlling it. This unselfishness allows the Surfer to get the board back, stop Galactus and fix his body. However, while everything worked out for Marvel’s First Family on the big screen, these abilities don’t bode well for Nick Fury and the rest of his team when the MCU’s Kl’rt makes his debut.
