When the latest Season kicked off in Fortnite it made the bold move of stopping building for 9 days, making it play more like a standard Battle Royale. It was pitched as a temporary move that combined with new traversal abilities to shake up gameplay, but there was plenty of chatter online to suggest that it’d become a permanent mode.
That has now happened, with Epic Games releasing the Zero Build update. It adds no building as an alternative mode, with the same flexibility in terms of playing in Solo, Duos, Trios, and Squads playlists. The standard mode with all of the building is back too, so evidently Epic is confident that the game’s enormous player base can sustain more playlists while catering to those that want a slightly purer Battle Royale experience.
Zero Build is a pure test of weapon, item, and traversal ability. Zero Build can be found in the Discover page as Solo, Duos, Trios, and Squads playlists. (Access the Discover page by clicking on the “CHANGE” button above “PLAY!” in the Lobby.)
Without building, all players have the recharging Overshield as your first line of defense in Zero Build. Zip up Ascenders to access Blimps or use Mantling to get the high-ground over your opponents. Don’t forget to Sprint between cover on your way to a Victory Royale!
It’s a move that, it seems to us, is designed to target and try to win over players from other Battle Royale games, with the likes of Apex Legends likely to be targeted. It’ll be interesting to see how the Fortnite community embraces the new mode.
