Former Venom Creative Team Thanks Let There Be Carnage Director for Credits Nod

Venom and King in Black creators Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman praised the Sony sequel for their special mention in the film’s credits.

The creative team behind Venom’s recent comic book exploits had a few kind words for the Venom: Let There Be Carnage production team.

Writer Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman, the creative force behind hits like Venom, Absolute Carnage and King in Black, were among the fans who helped Venom: Let There Be Carnage earn an impressive $11.6 million on its opening night. But while everybody was excited to see Venom and Carnage fighting for supremacy, Cates and Stegman were thrilled to see their names in the “Special Thanks” section of the credits. After leaving the film, both creators took to Twitter to share their good will. Stegman called the mention the best part of the movie, while Cates said “Means a lot. Let’s do it again sometime, yeah?” Luckily for Cates, if the early receipts and box office projections are anything to go by, there’s plenty more Venom still to come.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the sequel to 2018’s Venom, which earned Sony over $856 million. It stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock A.K.A. Venom, who has to survive against the villainous Carnage, played by Woody Harrelson. It is directed by noted motion-capture actor Andy Serkis, whose unique experience playing characters like Gollum influenced the film. However, as the credits show, the movie also made sure to pay respect to its comic book roots.

Starting in May 2018, just months before the release of the first Venom film, Cates and Stegman’s symbiote series began. It immediately expanded the world of Venom by creating Knull, the King in Black and symbiote god, while also showcasing confrontations with frequent foe Spider-Man and arch-nemesis Carnage. After nearly three years, their work culminated in 2021’s King in Black. This massive crossover event saw Eddie Brock face off against Knull one last time, becoming the new King in Black in the process. On Oct. 27, Venom is set to get a new ongoing series from writers Al Ewing and Ram V., with art by Bryan Hitch, which will pick up from where Cates and Stegman left off in their final issue on the series, Venom #200.

While superhero films continue to dominate Hollywood, many comic creators have noted the poor treatment that they have received by their former employers. Recently, the estate of comics legend Steve Dikto announced that they would be pursuing a copyright claim to Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. This comes only months after writer Ed Brubaker noted Marvel’s lackluster compensation towards him for creating the Winter Soldier. Venom: Let There Be Carnage has now recognized the folks who helped make it possible, with more Venom films able to play out on the big screen with their work available for inspiration.

Cates and Stegman weren’t the only comic creators to get shout outs in the Venom: Let There Be Carnage credits. Over a dozen noteworthy names were highlighted, including Venom co-creators Todd McFarlane and David Michelinie, Carnage co-creator Mark Bagley and longtime Amazing Spider-Man artist Erik Larsen. These credits served to recognize the work of comics creators, who are often lost in the shuffle of big studio movies.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is now available in theaters.
