Earlier this year DC Comics announced Flashpoint Beyond, a new bi-weekly six-issue series beginning next month and picking up where the 2011 event miniseries left off. The series kicks off with a #0 issue written by Geoff Johns, illustrated by Eduardo Risso, colored by Trish Mulvihill, and lettered by Rob Leigh. Today DC released a lettered preview of the issue, which features Thomas Wayne, the Batman of the Flashpoint timeline, teamed with a pair of familiar characters from the universe of Watchmen: the duo Marionette & Mime from Doomsday Clock.
Here’s how DC describes Flashpoint Beyond #0:
After sacrificing everything to help The Flash put the universe back together and save Bruce Wayne’s life, Thomas Wayne wakes up in a world he thought was no more. Forced to don the cowl once again, Batman prowls the streets of Gotham City searching for answers to how this world still exists, but what he starts to uncover will send him hurtling around the globe. The hunt for the Clockwork Killer starts here!
The newly-released five-page preview will appear in all DC titles shipping the weeks of March 29th and April 5th. It features Batman, Marionette, and Mime examining Rip Hunter’s old lab in search of something, which Marionette identifies as “Janey Slater’s watch.”
Janey Slater, of course, hails from the universe of Watchmen, and was the one-time girlfriend of Doctor Manhattan. Marionette and Mime were a criminal duo introduced in 2017’s Johns-written Doomsday Clock; the pair have been unseen since the conclusion of that series, though Flashpoint Beyond presumably takes place prior to the events of the Watchmen sequel. Then again, if Rip Hunter and the Time Masters are involved, anything is really possible.
In a statement accompanying the preview, writer Geoff Johns described how the series picks up after the original Flashpoint, and how it lays the groundwork for things to come:
“Collaborating with Eduardo has been a dream my entire career,” said writer Geoff Johns. “The chance to work on a story with such an iconic and legendary artist, centered around the troubled Thomas Wayne, made returning to the world of Flashpoint and its vengeful Batman special. Our goal was to create an event that’s every bit as emotional as it is epic, not only revealing the how’s and why’s of Thomas Wayne’s returning timeline but what it means to the past, present and future of Bruce Wayne and DC. We hope readers enjoy the ride.”
