The Infinite Frontier has found the multiverse’s Finest in President Superman & Flashpoint Batman, & they may be the key to stopping DC’s next crisis.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Infinite Frontier #6, on sale now.
With the immediate threat from Darkseid relegated to the background for now, the heroes of Justice Incarnate can begin picking up the pieces as they try to solve the new problem facing the multiverse. In the aftermath of a multiversal battle, a new World’s Finest team has been forged. Or, more accurately, the Multiverse’s Finest have been brought together in the form of President Superman and Flashpoint Batman.
While these two may not be the most stable of mixes in light of Thomas Wayne’s past actions, they are a hard combo to beat when their respective abilities are taken into account. As Infinite Frontier #6, by Joshua Williamson, Xermanico, Romulo Fajardo Jr., Tom Napolitano proves, both men represent the extremes of the traits that Superman and Batman have respectively, but that might serve both better through their multiverse adventures in the long run.
While every version of Kal-El raised in the right environment has incredible potential for leadership, Calvin Ellis, or President Superman, exceeds all of the others by holding an elected office and leading the heroes of the DC Multiverse through Justice Incarnate. He has the experience that no other Superman to date has truly achieved, having become President of the United States, while simultaneously defending the planet as Superman.
Impressively, he achieved this position by being Calvin and not Superman. This was a job he could only ever truly apply for by showing his merit to the people. This shows the level of trust an entire country places in him, even outside of his superhero identity. With those same leadership skills. Calvin has forged a team of drastically different allies from around the multiverse together into a cohesive unit, which he operates through diplomacy, even to one-time villains like Flashpoint Batman.
Thomas Wayne has not had an easy time over the past few years. He fought to save his son’s life only to be horrified by the life he leads as Batman in the main DC Universe. This lead to a misguided attempt to show Bruce how wrong he was, only for Thomas to learn too late that Bruce had been made stronger by his life and become the patriarch of an adoptive family. Now, Flashpoint Batman is left with a drive to redeem himself, but also with a greater understanding of the potential darkness that can lurk within a person.
Thomas Wayne was a doctor who swore an oath to due no harm. But when pushed to his emotional limit he became a much darker version of Batman, he was willing to kill and use much more violent methods to achieve his goals. For all his son’s achievements as the Dark Knight, there are lines he won’t cross. This is what makes Thomas deeply valuable in the multiverse. He not only has the skills of Batman, but an understanding of those who have fallen into the abyss as well as the means to stop them.
In short, both men are the extremes of the most prominent traits of the World’s Finest. Rather than being an impediment though, this will be a major asset in the battles to come. The two have already worked together on an investigation and while there is still room for their working relationship to grow, they have a solid dynamic that will only grow in the upcoming Justice League Incarnate comic series.
President Superman can inspire those they meet, and Flashpoint Batman can terrify their enemies into submission. Both have the drive to save the multiverse, different reasons for doing so, but ultimately ones that tie back to protecting those they love. And though they still have a long way to go, their dynamic is undoubtedly going to be one of the most interesting aspects of the Infinite Frontier moving forward.
