Flash Thompson has brought himself back to life only to discover strange new powers that could be his greatest weapon.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Extreme Carnage Alpha by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Manuel Garcia, Cam Smith, Marc Deering, Roberto Poggi, Guru-eFX and VC’s Travis Lanham, on sale now.
Carnage is finally back after suffering a gruesome demise at the hands of the new King in Black. To make matters worse, the now omnipresent Eddie Brock seems to be far too busy dealing with the next great threat to the Marvel Universe to deal with the problem himself. Thankfully, Eddie wasn’t the only hero to resurrect themselves as pure living darkness, and Flash Thompson’s new powers might even hold the key to destroying Carnage once and for all.
Flash Thompson is still adjusting to his new life as a symbiote, not to mention being alive at all. Since resurrecting himself alongside Eddie Brock from within the symbiote Hive itself, Flash has tried to keep a low profile, though so far he hasn’t done a particularly good job of that. Still, he has kept himself busy with work while not getting back into the swing of the occasional heroic intervention, and it seems that a return to some semblance of normalcy might not be all that far away. Unfortunately, Flash’s new life appears to have come with some new powers that could make normal all but impossible. While in the middle of a job, he is consumed by a sudden headache and the maniacal voice of someone else who has just come back from the dead — Carnage.
Eddie transported into the body of a young man who himself was host to a symbiote, and who just so happened to be in a car with Carnage when the serial killing symbiote decided to let loose. Before Carnage can rip the kid to shreds, Flash materializes as Agent Anti-Venom and prepares to launch a ferocious assault on his foe. Not a moment too soon, Flash is snapped back to reality before he can actually harm his coworker and friend, making it clear that he still has little to no control over whatever it was that just happened. Of course, if Flash is able to figure it out, he might just be able to do what Eddie Brock failed to and end Carnage’s life permanently.
Flash comes into contact with Tony Stark that same evening, and while discussing the impending threat, Flash reveals that he feels a sort of pull towards Carnage. This was already somewhat apparent from his previous experience, although somehow both Flash and Tony miss what could be their greatest advantage in fighting Carnage. Specifically, Flash’s new form as a being made purely of living darkness. When Flash and Eddie met inside the symbiote Hive during King in Black, it was after Eddie discovered that they could live on as a Codex after death. This, combined with the power of their respective symbiotes and an incredible amount of willpower, allowed both of them to effectively resurrect themselves through the living darkness that Knull had covered the Earth with. As the center of the Hive, Eddie Brock is now an omnipresent being so long as the symbiotes he wishes to pilot are willing to accept his consciousness into their forms. As far as it looks, Flash has at least some amount of that same power thanks to his own connection to the Hive. Coupled with the Anti-Venom symbiote’s caustic effect on others of its kind, Flash could very well become a one-man army once again.
If Flash is able to master that ability, then he should have no problem keeping track of Carnage for as long as he feels whatever their connection is exactly. Not only could Flash instantaneously catch up to Carnage but he could even use it to launch a final assault on the deadliest of Venom’s spawn. There’s little doubt that Agent Anti-Venom could do the job on his best day, it’s just a matter of getting to that point before his next run-in with Carnage.
