The first details about Marvel’s new Disney+ series from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton are revealed.
The first details of a new Marvel Studios/Disney+ series from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton have surfaced.
As reported by Variety, Cretton signed on to write and direct a new Marvel series in a multi-year deal that allows him to work with both Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective. While very few details are known about the Disney+ series and it’s unclear if the show is related to Shang-Chi, sources claim the series to be a comedy.
Cretton, who is also working on a television adaptation of American Born Chinese for Disney+, noted his excitement for the projects in a statement. “Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective. I can’t wait to explore new stories and build new worlds with this community,” he said.
The news of Cretton’s new series comes alongside the announcement of a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which he will also return to direct. “Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said in a statement regarding the announcement of Cretton’s new series. “We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney Plus, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”
The news of a Shang-Chi sequel comes as no surprise, considering how the film was a commercial success that grossed a total of $432 million at the worldwide box office. Shang-Chi is currently the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes and has been praised by fans and critics for its exciting origin story, its representation of Asian culture and the phenomenal cast.
It was recently rumored that a Shang-Chi spin-off series revolving around the hero’s sister, Meng’er Zhang’s Xialing, was in development for Disney+. Shang-Chi‘s second post-credit scene left room for potential exploration, which saw Xialing seemingly take over the Ten Rings criminal organization to train new warriors in her father’s old headquarters. Whether this is related to Cretton’s new project is unknown, as the series has not been officially confirmed by Marvel or Disney.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now streaming on Disney+.
