With F9 proving to a hit, Fast & Furious spinoffs are in the works. But instead of giving one on Cipher, it should go to Helen Mirren’s Queenie.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for F9, now in theaters.
With F9 proving to be a massive hit, Fast & Furious spinoffs are in the works. Vin Diesel has expressed interest in a Dom Toretto prequel, while a spinoff is being planned with Charlize Theron’s cyberterrorist, Cipher. However, while it’s nice that the Fast & Furious series is willing to focus on its female characters, that movie should go to Helen Mirren’s Magdalene Shaw, aka Queenie.
Queenie doesn’t appear for long periods in the franchise, but she has so much poise and power in her performances, it’s easy to want more from her. She debuted in The Fate of the Furious as the mother of Deckard (Jason Statham) and Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), convincing her boys to turn away from a life of evil and help Team Toretto. And while she dips in and out of prison, considering the comfort there to be a form of retirement, F9 reinforces why she’d be better suited for a spinoff than Cipher.
Queenie’s found by Dom during a jewel heist in Europe as he seeks intel on his brother, and after she ropes him in as an unwilling partner, she steals a high-end car and shows her grace and skill behind the wheel. Dom’s clearly impressed, mostly by her driving skills, the way she bosses him around and how she continues to evade authorities with consummate ease. As Hobbs said, she’s the most badass woman he knows, and Dom can tell, apart from Letty, that’s the truth.
A spinoff can focus on how Queenie became this criminal mastermind in her early days. It could have the vibe of a female James Bond and reveal more details about her past, especially because fans still don’t know who fathered her kids. That angle could allow for a younger actress to play the character in flashbacks, with Queenie in the present working alongside her sons or daughter, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby). A mother-daughter heist movie could also work really well, as it would pave the way for Queenie to lend her experience, expertise and leadership to an all-female film, which is said to be in the works.
In reality, Cipher’s a one-dimensional character, and there’s just no real mystery to her brand of anarchy. Queenie, on the other hand, has intrigue to her, and as she runs her operation across the world with her children, she’d be the perfect person to continue the series’ theme of family. Seeing as she’s also a pseudo-mother to Dom, respected by industry peers and a just an overall hit with fans, a Queenie spinoff feels like the next logical step to kick the franchise into high gear.
Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron. The film is in theaters now.
