F9: Yoda Hatred Forms Otto and Cipher’s Alliance

[ad_1]

There’s a twist in F9’s finale that sees a deadly alliance form only because a key player hates Star Wars’ Master Yoda.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for F9, now in theaters.

As much as Jakob (John Cena) seems like he’s F9‘s main villain, there’s a predictable twist in the final act that has him betrayed for a new, deadly alliance to form. It’s unsurprising as it paves the way for Jakob’s inevitable redemption and homecoming with the Toretto family while also putting Charlize Theron’s Cipher back into the limelight. The funny thing is she doesn’t have much of a pitch to Jakob’s boss; the deal is sealed all because of her hatred for Yoda.

Otto’s the financial backer of Jakob’s crew, looking to hijack the Aries program and take over the world’s weapons systems. But to start this off, he has Jakob kidnap Cipher as he wants the competition out the way. He can’t kill her, though, as he might need her expertise later to get around digital security systems.

When they assemble the first part of Aries, Otto gloats in front of Cipher, believing he’s on the precipice of changing the world. Thinking he’s on the verge of glory, he wants to let Cipher know how good life is as a billionaire right now.

In fact, he considers his terrorist group a rebellion and calls himself Luke Skywalker, thinking the global military is the Death Star. He even wonders if he’s a rogue like Han Solo. However, Cipher stops him dead in his tracks, letting him know he’s more of a Yoda. Otto, a clear Star Wars geek, is loving the comparison. He asks her if his genius plotting has put him on a sage level.

Cipher puts a twist in the tale by saying he’s just “a puppet with someone’s hand up his ass,” like Yoda. It angers Otto, making him feel like Jakob’s playing him and just wants his resources. Clearly, she’s pushing the idea of Yoda as a Jedi tool that was used to fracture the galaxy, not save it. It’s a literal insult as well, playing with the fact Frank Oz brought Yoda to life as a puppet in The Empire Strikes Back. That said, Otto takes the insult constructively. After Jakob keeps botching the kills on Team Toretto and Cipher helps his crew out with her hacking skills, he decides he needs her as a partner.

Otto betrays Jakob by having his goon trying to kick him off their mobile base. He swaps in Cipher to finish the heroes off, indicating Otto is more of a Sith, believing in the Rule of Two per Palpatine, backstabbing his apprentices on numerous occasions.

Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron. The film is in theaters now.
