F9 Reveals How Dom Met Santos & Leo

[ad_1]

In F9, a key prison flashback in Los Angeles reveals how Dom met two heroic fan-favorite characters from the Fast & Furious franchise.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for F9, now in theaters.

In the Fast & Furious movies, as much as Dom (Vin Diesel) has his regular crew, he’s also got some guys on standby he can call upon to help save the day. The two most prominent ones are Leo (Tego Calderón) and Santos (Don Omar), with fans loving their free-spirited vibe, swagger and overall energy as street racers. Dom made a life within the Dominican Republic. Now, come F9, audiences learn exactly how he met the duo and how they played bigger roles in his destiny than first assumed.

Leo and Santos have been there when Dom needs them most. They helped him jack oil and sell it to make millions and help out poor people in Fast & Furious. This event showed how efficient they were as a crew, which tailed back even further to Los Bandoleros, where they broke Leo out of jail and set this particular heist up.

They also assisted with the Rio caper in Fast Five, infiltrating a police station and proving they’re masters of disguise. Admittedly, they gamble too much. However, they show up big time when Dom needs to rescue his son from Cipher in The Fate of the Furious, adding numbers and leveling the playing field.

While F9 dives deep into flashback sequences, it is a surprise to learn when and where Dom met the duo. After Dom beat the driver who caused the accident that killed his dad, he got sent to an LA prison. There, he killed time fixing cars and chatting with Leo and Santos in the garage. They talked about the harsh realities for people of color and how they were profiled, which landed them in jail.

It was a good change of pace for Dom, who began letting go of his anger. However, Leo and Santos pointed out a flaw in the engine he was working on, revealing key clues that enlightened him about his father’s death. Dom realized his dad’s engine had been tampered with, and the pit mechanic involved was his brother, Jakob. The revelation led to Dom racing his brother and banishing him after getting out of prison. He hated Jakob but little did he know, his dad asked Jakob to sabotage it so they’d lose the race and clear up debts. Sadly, they couldn’t predict the accident to come.

That said, this makes Leo and Santos even more important. They’re dominoes that set Dom on his path to Brian and the spy team and helping Jakob atone. It’s an iconic friendship that viewers had no clue possessed this much nuance, and it’s all because they got pulled over by ignorant cops.

Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron. The film is in theaters now.
