F Is for Family’s Frank Murphy seems to lead a quiet, domestic life; however, a fan theory suggests he could be the infamous D. B. Cooper.
Netflix’s F Is for Family, created by comedian Bill Burr and Michael Price, is a new staple sitcom on the streaming platform. It incorporates Bill Burr’s sense of humor and some real stories from his past to create a hilarious animated sitcom that tackles issues like anger, trauma and coming of age. It follows Frank Murphy and his wife Sue as they try to navigate being parents alongside their own professional ambitions. However, a recent fan theory suggests there may be more to Frank than meets the eye.
The theory suggests that Frank is actually D. B. Cooper, the unidentified man who infamously hijacked a plane in 1971. The Reddit user mentions several comparisons between the hijacker and Frank, and some of the alignments are scary in their accuracy.
Firstly, the theory suggests that there’s a grudge that ties Frank Murphy to D. B. Cooper. Cooper was quoted as saying that he “didn’t have a grudge against the airline, just a grudge in general,” when he hijacked the Boeing 727 aircraft. When comparing Cooper to Frank, this definitely applies. Frank dreamed of being a pilot since he was young. However, because Sue got pregnant, he decided to give up his dream and settle for a steady job to provide for his family.
That said, Frank definitely harbors some kind of grudge against that decision. When Sue pursues her own career in Season 2, Frank admits he’s jealous that she gets to follow her dreams while he’s completely jobless at the time. Frank also suffers a lot of turmoil working for an airline that eventually decides to fire him with little justification. As such, Frank Murphy has plenty of reasons to bear a grudge against airlines.
The fan theory also states that military experience would have been necessary for Cooper to seamlessly use a parachute for his aircraft escape. Frank was an infantryman in Korea during the war, so he absolutely knows how to safely use and deploy a parachute, even during times of stress. Cooper also used an older military-style parachute, which Frank would have likely been trained on given the timeline.
Cooper is also described as middle-aged, like Frank. Frank Murphy also has enough angst, pressure and struggle in his life that it seems totally plausible that he would hijack a plane for a hefty ransom of $200,000. The money would help raise his family, which always seems to be growing, and fund his dreams of becoming a pilot.
The last detail that the fan theory connects to Frank is the titanium found on Cooper’s tie clip. At the time of the hijacking, titanium would have only been found in rail yards. Frank, who was fired from his job at Mohican Airways, took a job filling vending machines around the city. This gig would have definitely taken him into and around rail yards, which is how the titanium could have found its way onto his tie clip.
While some of these details, like the titanium, may seem like a bit of a stretch, the fan theory is pretty sound. No one has ever discovered D. B. Cooper’s true identity, so why couldn’t he be a fictional character on a Netflix show? Frank Murphy has more than enough reasons to justify a stunt like that, and he tends to fly off the handle pretty often. With his military experience and grudge against airlines, it’s not a far leap to suggest that D. B. Cooper is actually F Is for Family‘s Frank Murphy.
