Extreme Carnage just made a huge change in the life of a fan-favorite symbiote from the ’90s, forcing them to become a different kind of hero.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Extreme Carnage: Scream by Clay McLeod Chapman, Chris Mooneyham, Marcio Menyz, David Nakayama, and VC’s Travis Lanham, on sale now.
Andi Benton hasn’t had an easy life since being introduced to symbiotes. As the host of the Scream symbiote, she encouraged the creature to live a heroic life with her that has just been interrupted by the influence of Carnage. Luckily, Andi has another set of powers to rely on that just might transform her into a whole new kind of hero.
Tensions around symbiotes have rarely been higher than since the events of King in Black. As Scream is dealing with a lingering threat in the form of Doppelganger, she is overcome by a painful pounding in the back of her head. This mental intrusion has been on the part of Carnage himself, now back from the depths and at the center of his own symbiote Hive, and he has come for Scream. Carnage’s pull and promises of family are enough to turn the Scream symbiote on its host no matter how much Andi pleads. As such, she is left with no choice but to fight back with the only power she has left. Fortunately for Andi, it happens to be enough to end the threat of her former symbiote.
In an instant, Andi unleashes the infernal flames from her Hell-Mark, burning away the Scream symbiote and leaving her with only a pool of unmoving remains once the fire has died down. The Hell-Mark is considered a curse, but as far as Andi is concerned it has always been a gift. When she first bonded to a portion of the Venom symbiote thanks to Flash Thompson in 2013’s Venom #38 by Cullen Bunn and Kim Jacinto, it came with the Hell-Mark that the symbiote had been branded with during Flash’s battle against the forces of Blackheart. After so much time spent bonded to the part of Venom that would become Mania, the Hell-Mark was transferred from it to Andi herself.
The Hell-Mark provided Andi with the means to defend herself while separated from her symbiote in the war against Lee Price and his Inklings, and she even managed to stave off Knull thanks to her infernal powers when the two came face to face during King in Black: Scream #1 by Clay MacLeod Chapman and Garry Brown. Andi has been protecting her symbiote from the flames for years, but with the symbiote’s defection to Carnage’s side, that is no longer a viable option, and she unleashes its full unholy power.
Now armed with only her hellish powers, Andrea Benton has come too far in her evolution as a hero to give up after losing another symbiote, even if this particular loss weighs heavier on her heart than the last. She also still has the pressing concern of the Guardsmen who are certainly not going to wait for Andi to compose herself before opening fire on her.
Burning pentagrams and demonic blazes may be new as a primary weapon for Andi, but those powers will enable her to continue her fight against Carnage. Assuming she survives the battle to come, Andi will need to evolve into a new kind of hero, using the abilities she has to become a force for good in the Marvel Universe.
