The big secret of Carnage’s return has just been revealed, and the Hive that he has built for himself just became even more terrifying.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Extreme Carnage: Scream by Clay McLeod Chapman, Chris Mooneyham, Marcio Menyz, David Nakayama and VC’s Travis Lanham, on sale now.
As horrifying as the events of King in Black were, the aftermath of Knull’s invasion might turn out to be even worse thanks to the twisted influence of Carnage. The serial killer symbiote has returned from his watery grave, and he has big plans in store for the whole world. Not only has Carnage quickly climbed his way back up the food chain, but he has also found himself a place at the center of his own symbiote Hive.
Scream has been on the hunt for the Demogoblin when she spots the recently escaped Doppelganger and decides to drop in. The monstrous Spider-Man clone of sorts has never been anything Scream couldn’t handle, but the pounding that overwhelms her mind after dealing with the threat pushes her over the edge. As she slinks into the sewers in the hopes of escaping the incessant thrumming, Andi discovers that she has actually been pulled into the darkest corner of her own mind by none other than Carnage himself. It was his dark pull that she was feeling, and now that she has been caught in his grasp, he is happy to explain how exactly that has happened.
As Flash Thompson and Tony Stark have already discovered, Carnage has somehow crafted a Hive of his own. or rather, he has simply made a home for himself in the primary Hive that has existed since Knull. When the King in Black was knocked off of his throne, the Hive became devoid of any ruler for long enough that Carnage could slip in before Eddie Brock rose to the role of king of the symbiotes. Not only has Carnage been using his place within the Hive to amass a symbiote army of his own from the refugees left from Knull’s war on Earth, but he has been doing so without the current King in Black taking any notice. This could be because Eddie has given the symbiotes an unprecedented amount of freedom. Being connected to the other symbiotes is one thing, but as Carnage displays in his effective kidnapping of Andi Benton, it goes far deeper than anyone could have expected.
Carnage isn’t just talking other symbiotes into joining his cause, he is actually drawing them in in a way that some, including Scream, have found literally irresistible. No matter how much Andi pleads with her symbiote, Scream is unable to turn away from Carnage’s dark call. Much like the symbiotes that Flash encountered when he was investigating Carnage’s recent reappearance, Scream is both drawn to and apparently corrupted by the influence of Carnage — enough so that Andi is left fighting it on her own. Now that the way in which Carnage developed his own Hive has been revealed, the chances of stopping him are looking slimmer than ever. After all, if not even the King in Black knows what his worst enemy is doing within his own Hive, then there really is no telling how deep Carnage has already sunken his hooks into the rest of the symbiotes on Earth.
