Next week Z2 Comics will release its latest music-themed anthology, this one centered around the work of iconic ’90s rock/ska punk band Sublime. Written by Ryan Cady, Sublime: $5 at the Door is an anthology of stories inspired by the music of the band and their own personal histories. Today The Beat is pleased to present an exclusive excerpt from chapter 6 of the anthology, featuring artwork by Alex Diotto.
Here’s how Z2 Comics describes Sublime: $5 at the Door:
CELEBRATING THE ICONIC LEGACY OF SUBLIME WITH THE OFFICIAL GRAPHIC NOVEL
The laid-back Long Beach trio spawned an entire genre—fusing reggae grooves, punk grittiness, ska energy, back-porch folk introspection, and hip-hop swagger. The band goes from playing backyard parties and selling cassettes out of the trunks of their cars to creating an entirely new and revolutionary blend of chart topping music.
Xanadu meets Superbad in this heartfelt anthology of SUBLIME legends brought to life by RYAN CADY (Green Lantern, Poppy’s Inferno), AUDREY MOK (Archie), ALEX DIOTTO (Youth), HAYDEN SHERMAN (Angel & Spike), LOGAN FAERBER (‘Namwolf), rising stars BILL MASUKU, ROBERT AHMAD and JULIANNE GRIEPP. Featuring brand-new cover artwork by SUBLIME family members OPIE ORTIZ and DJ PRODUCT ©1969! Plus: the one and only LOU DOG!
Along with the exclusive excerpt, Cady described to The Beat the experience of revisiting both the music of the band and the era in which it was released:
“It’s been wild to dive back into the band’s history and culture and see everything in a new light – not just the music and the stories, but the neighborhoods that I grew up in. New context and wild details. Sublime always felt like a kind of ambient background score to so much of SoCal, but uncovering all the depth and nuance to each track they made, the larger-than-life antics and adventures that involved dozens of these incredibly influential characters…it’s been a helluva trip, to say the least.”
As with all Z2 Comics releases, Sublime: $5 at the Door comes in standard softcover and hardcover editions, as well as deluxe editions that include an oversized hardcover of the book, exclusive art prints, vinyl LPs, and more.
