1. What inspired you to create Daybreak?

I’ve always been a romantic at heart and I enjoy reading about happy couples. One of my inspirations was definitely shoujo manga, a personal favorite was Kimi Ni Todoke. Having friends and family that are always supportive of one another is something I wish more people could have.

2. What was your inspiration for creating the characters of Marcus and Cog?

Marcus and Cog were created for 2 different stories with connecting timelines.

Marcus is from my first original comic called Sunshine Boy. He was first made as a support character for one of the main boys named Grey but as I developed him more I decided to make him someone more important and to fit the ‘big brother’ role that Grey needed. His personality was inspired by Alphonse from Fullmetal Alchemist. Sweet, reliable, and can be cheeky at times.

Cog was always meant to be smart. I wanted a character to fit the role of a genius but someone who didn’t fit the stereotype of what you imagine a nerd to be like as you see in movies. They’re outspoken, don’t let others push them down about their interests, and of course very attentive. Cog was mostly inspired by Velma from the old Scooby-Doo series and a little bit of Spock from Star Trek.

3. Can you tell us about your creative process for developing the plot of Daybreak?

When it comes down to writing I make important points of what needs to be talked about or shown. Slice of life doesn’t need anything extravagant to happen but characters should always be interesting so that people want to know more about them. One of the biggest things that helps me is talking about the characters with my sister. They know all my characters the best and we talk about fun scenarios we can put them in.

4. How did you decide on the title “Daybreak” for the Webtoon?

I wanted a title to fit the theme of my first comic Sunshine Boy that Marcus first appeared in. I almost went with the name “Sunshower” but I didn’t like both titles starting with the word sun. I also had the idea of Cog or Marcus confessing during a sunrise.

5. Without spoiling much, how do you think Marcus and Cog’s relationship will evolve throughout the series?

I think their feelings will only get stronger. They will also learn things about each other they wouldn’t have known before. Maybe even finding out little peeves they have about the other would be fun too.

6. Can you share any behind-the-scenes moments from the creation of Daybreak that fans might find interesting?

Here are some sketches/doodles I have of Marcus and Cog’s family.

Cog’s nana and uncle were always meant to be an important influence on their character and I wanted them to be recurring in Daybreak.

Marcus’s parents are very supportive of him and his interests but they weren’t ever meant to be shown in the comic itself because an important part of their character is they overwork themselves too much they don’t have time to enjoy life.

There was a scene/moment I cut out from the original where Cog and Toma would find out about Marcus’s type based on his favorite celebrity and they would conclude the person who fits the best description was their friend, Duy.

In the end, I scrapped that idea due to it being out of character since Cog is more direct about their intentions and Toma wouldn’t make Cog do something he didn’t want by jumping to conclusions. I also don’t like stressing readers out about miscommunication issues within the series. That’s one of my main don’ts.

7. What has been the most challenging aspect of creating Daybreak?

To be honest the WEBTOON layout. I’m not used to the scrolling aspect of comic making since I’ve mostly done the book/page-by-page type of layout. Also, coloring is always the most tedious part for me and, this was my first time making a full-color comic. Other than that everything has been fun and enjoyable for me.

8. What message or theme do you hope readers take away from Daybreak?

That love can be shown in many ways and to treat yourself well. I want people to be able to dream big and enjoy life and that it’s also okay to take your time.

9. Are there any particular Webtoons or creators that have influenced your work on Daybreak?

None in particular have influenced me in the making of Daybreak. But Brass & Sass by antlerella was a webtoon that I enjoyed from start to finish. Also both our comics take place in Canada!

10. Lastly, what are your long-term goals for Daybreak?

If it were up to me I’d love to see it animated but that’s more so a big dream of mine. I think something like a physical copy would be more doable. I’d like to be able to continue Daybreak further into their adulthood and see where the future takes them.
