To acquire the strongest Personas in Persona 5 Royal, it is crucial to understand the mechanics of the Velvet Room. Here’s how it all works.
One of the mechanics that makes Persona stand out amongst monster-collecting RPGs is the macabre Velvet Room. A staple of the series, the Velvet Room allows players to strengthen their Personas in various ways. This remains true in Persona 5 Royal, where you assume the role of Joker and perform heists on the hearts of the game’s cruelest characters. This abstract premise requires an equally bizarre version of the Velvet Room. Appearing as a sinister prison located somewhere between consciousness and subconsciousness, the Room empowers Joker’s Personas by subjecting them to brutal executions and rituals.
Players gain access to this strange realm on the in-game day of 4/9. Joker wakes up only to find himself behind bars wearing tattered prisoner’s rags. Here he meets Igor, the host of the Velvet Room, who lets him utilize the Room’s grim features. Each of these features requires a unique unlock condition and introduces a twisted new way to upgrade Personas.
Dyad Guillotine (Persona Fusion)
Unlocked after infiltrating Kamoshida’s Castle Palace, the Dyad Guillotine is the first Persona Fusion that players reach. Using the guillotine, two Personas can be sacrificed to fuse into one stronger Persona (though it can’t be stronger than Joker’s current level). The stats of a fused Persona will depend on the level and Arcana type of the two base Personas. Unlike in previous games, a fused Persona’s skills are not random. Instead, players can select which skills will be inherited from either of the base Personas.
Another layer to fusions is the Arcana Burst, which utilizes Confidants to create Personas even stronger than Joker himself. Any Persona fused within the same Arcana as a Confidant will gain an Arcana Burst that grants bonus experience points, with higher ranks naturally providing more experience. However, a fused persona can miss out on an Arcana Burst if the fusion results in an accident.
Group Guillotine (Advanced Fusion)
In addition to Normal Fusions, there are also Advanced Fusions that are accessible once the Group Guillotine has been unlocked at Strength Rank 1. Despite involving more Personas, this version of the guillotine is much simpler to use due to all of the fusion combinations being preset. No worries about combining the proper skills and Arcana here, you need merely possess the required Personas.
Lockdown (Train Personas)
Lockdown jails a Persona, preventing it from battling in exchange for a new resistance skill. Unlocked at Strength Rank 3, it allows you to choose an element that your Persona is weak to and have that weakness eliminated. If a Persona already resists all of the elements, it will gain a random ailment resistance instead. Any resistances that a Persona acquires will scale with its level.
Using Incense obtained from Rose or Kichijoji grants a stat bonus to a Persona when it comes out of Lockdown. This bonus is doubled while the Fusion Alarm is active.
Fusion Alarm
The Fusion Alarm is finally unlocked when Joker secures the treasure route in Kaneshiro’s Bank Palace. A new mechanic introduced in Royal, the Fusion Alarm has a chance to activate after every battle. The alert only ends after utilizing its effects or by speaking to the twin wardens. The Fusion Alarm has a different effect on each aspect of the Velvet Room but generally offers powerful benefits in exchange for increased risk.
A Persona created while the Fusion Alarm is active can inherit more of its chosen skills and will receive a bigger Arcana Burst as long as no fusion accidents occur. Players will also have the option to mutate skills into something new. Be wary, as some Fusion Alarms will randomly mutate all of a Persona’s skills. This has the potential to ruin your carefully laid plans to create a Persona with the perfect blend of skills.
Electric Chair (Itemize Persona)
Upon securing the treasure route in Madarame’s Museum Palace, Joker will be rewarded with the Electric Chair. Zapping a Persona will sacrifice it in exchange for a specific item. This item will be strengthened while the Fusion Alarm is active, but the result could be a different, random item if the execution ends in failure.
Gallows (Strengthen Persona)
The next form of execution Joker will come across is the Gallows, available after securing the treasure route in Futaba’s Pyramid Palace. The Gallows allows you to outright sacrifice one Persona to strengthen another. Higher-level Personas will obviously offer more experience, and using the Gallows during the Fusion Alarm may have the side effect of your sacrificed Persona passing along some of its skills.
Public Execution (Network Fusion)
The final unlockable in the Velvet Room is the Public Execution, which is available automatically once you reach 9/19, assuming you’re online and opted into connecting to The Thieve’s Network. It functions the same as a Normal Fusion, but only requires one of your Personas. The other will be provided by another player, and the resulting fusion will be random. This method of fusion can only be performed once per day.
Completing any Persona game can be an arduous task, and Royal is no exception. Understanding the various components of the Velvet Room is essential to eventually reach one of the game’s many endings. The executions and rituals that you perform along the way are sure to be gruesome, so keep reminding yourself that in this game, power requires sacrifice.
