Every The Outer Wilds Endings, Explained

[ad_1]

Mobius Digital’s The Outer Wilds is a 2019 action-adventure game published by Annapurna Interactive that fell under many people’s radar at release. Players wake up around a campfire, prepare their ship for space exploration and take off into the “outer wilds” to discover all the universe has to offer. One key gameplay mechanics is that, when players die, time loops. The events leading up to death are recorded, and the player starts again at the campfire on the home planet.

The Outer Wilds, which recently released on Nintendo Switch, and its DLC, Echoes of the Eye, have eight endings for players to discover. Most revolve around the Ash Twin Project and its Advanced Warp Core, since the warp core is revealed to be the reason for the time loop. There’s also a post-credit scene that changes slightly depending on certain player achievements in the game. Here’s how to unlock each ending.

How to Get The Outer Wild’s Breaking Spacetime Ending

The Outer Wilds' High Energy Lab black and white holes.

Players can get this ending in two ways, both of which involve the Ember Twin planet. One way is by finding the Ash Twin Project via the Ash Twin planet. Go to the dead body underneath the bridge when the Sun is down and wait for the black funnel to cross over the bridge. Once it does, run to the teleporter in the adjacent room, and it will take you to the Ash Twin Project. Lob a scout through the black hole, trigger a new loop and watch as the fabric of spacetime unravels.

Alternatively, players can go to the High Energy Lab on the Ember Twin planet. Once at the lab, insert a white and black warp core into the slots to open a panel that reveals a white and black hole on the other side. Send a scout through the black hole, and it will exit through the white hole. Send a second scout through the black hole, but remove one of the warp cores before it exits. The scouts will display an error message, and black cracks will appear on the screen before engulfing the player in darkness.

How to Get The Outer Wild’s Eye Of The Universe Ending

The Eye of the Universe ending is considered the true ending to The Outer Wilds. Remove the Advanced Warp Core from the Ash Twin Project, travel to Dark Bramble and insert the warp core into The Vessel. Input the coordinates received from the tracking probe. Players will then warp to the Eye of the universe. Travel from the North to the South pole, then jump into the upward flowing stream. This will transport them to another new area where they must gather all those they encountered on their journey around a campfire. If playing with the DLC, this includes the Prisoner. Players can jump into the ball that approaches the campfire during this section. From there, players will witness the birth of a new universe.

How to Get The Outer Wild’s Game Over Ending

The Outer Wilds Advanced Warp Core in the Ash Twin Project.

Players get the Game Over ending by being disconnected from the Nomai statue and dying. These statues record the data that is sent to the past during a time loop, so if players are disconnected, they cannot be sent back in time. This can happen a couple different ways. At the beginning of the game, players can be creative and die prior to linking with the Nomai statue in the first place.

Alternatively, players can die by later removing the Advanced Warp Core from the Ash Twin Project, then dying. Since the Advanced Warp Core is required to initiate the time loop, players will be killed instead of going back in time. Players will be informed “You Are Dead” and return to the Main Menu to reload their last save.

How to Get The Outer Wild’s Isolation Ending

Player escaping to ship with Advanced Warp Core.

Players get the Isolation ending if they remove the Advanced Warp Core from the Ash Twin Project, return to their ship and fly as far away from the Sun as possible. Eventually, the Sun will disappear from view, and players will find their ship floating alone in space. A message will inform players that they have escaped the supernova event, but they will only survive as long as their remaining supplies last. As the name implies, the players will be alone in the universe since everything else was taken out by the supernova.

How to Get The Outer Wild’s Quantum Moon Ending

The Quantum Moon's quantum elevator in The Outer Wilds.

Players get the Quantum Moon ending by removing the Advanced Warp Core from the Ash Twin Project and taking it to the Quantum Moon. Once on the moon, use the quantum elevator to travel to its sixth location. Present the warp core to Solanum. After some more exploration, the screen will eventually fade to black. Players will be informed they have completely lost track of time, and so they will survive the supernova event with Solanum. The game will return to the Main Menu after the credits roll, and players can restart from their last save.

How to Get The Outer Wild’s Self Ending

Player meets Self in The Outer Wilds.

When players are in the Ash Twin Project on the Ember Twin planet, they can jump through the black hole and then trigger a new loop. Upon returning to the Ash Twin Project, players will meet Self, the version of themselves from the last loop. If players do not jump through the black hole again, they create a paradox. If the player does not jump through the black hole, the past Self becomes unmoored from spacetime since Self was a past version who did jump through the black hole. Therefore, Self cannot actually exist if the player does not jump through the black hole. This ending triggers the Breaking Spacetime ending.

How to Get Echoes Of The Eye’s Dream Ending

Simulation fire on the Stranger in The Outer Wilds.

Players get the Dream ending by removing the Advanced Warp Core from the Ash Twin Project and approaching the simulation fire on the Stranger space station. Instead of resting before the fire, players must die in front of the fire and enter the simulation. Players can do this easily by jumping into the fire and letting the flames take their toll. Players cannot die in the simulation during this time or have their artifact flame go out to achieve this ending. Similar to the Quantum Moon ending, players will lose track of time and be stuck in the simulation while the supernova passes outside.

How to Get Echoes Of The Eye’s The Stranger Ending

A ship on the Stranger space station in The Outer Wilds.

Players get the Stranger ending by traveling to the Stranger after removing the Advanced Warp Core from the Ash Twin Project. The player can then explore while waiting for the supernova event. The Stranger will avoid destruction, leaving players to forage for themselves for the remainder of their days on the space station. This ending is similar to the Isolation ending of the base game except slightly less bleak since the player character essentially has a whole new realm to explore until the end of their days.
