There is a lot of Star Wars content planned for the next few years, so here’s all of the shows that are in the works from a galaxy far, far away.
With the launch of Disney+ and the oncoming of Star Wars live-action television series, there’s more Star Wars entertainment than ever before. The first two seasons of The Mandalorian were met with unprecedented success; Season 7 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars gave fans a long-desired clincher for the hit show, and The Bad Batch has efficiently filled in a lot of Star Wars‘ stories between the original and prequel trilogies.
Following the success of these recent entries, Disney has piled on plans for its Star Wars content. Season 3 of The Mandalorian is on schedule for a 2022 release date, along with Season 2 of The Bad Batch. However, there is a whole slew of other TV shows in various stages of development. With Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic no longer in development, here’s everything else we know that’s coming.
Star Wars: Visions
Set to release on Sept. 22, 2021, Star Wars: Visions is something entirely different from anything Star Wars fans have seen in the past. The new show will consist of nine anthology short films, but its style is what’s unique. Star Wars: Visions is animated in a Japanese anime style — a really fun, artsy way of celebrating Star Wars, and it will be a great way of looking at the galaxy far, far away from a diverse, cultural perspective.
Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett
After making his return to Star Wars – and finally confirming his survival after falling into the Sarlacc Pit — in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Boba Fett is set to lead his own series. Along with Temuera Morrison as the titular Mandalorian, the series has cast Ming-Na Wen as fellow bounty hunter Fennec Shand.
While details on the show’s plot are slim, there is unlimited potential, and by using flashbacks, it will likely cover multiple eras in Star Wars history. Possible story points could include Boba Fett escaping the Sarlacc, living in the desert of Tatooine and taking over Jabba’s old crime syndicate. There’s clearly a lot to work with, and answers will be available when The Book of Boba Fett premieres sometime in December of 2021.
Star Wars: Andor
Star Wars: Andor is centered around Cassian Andor, who first appeared in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as a Rebel agent who wasn’t afraid to play dirty for the Rebellion. Since Cassian died in the film, the Andor series – which will have 12 episodes in Season 1 — will be a prequel and focus on Cassian’s formative years with the Rebel Alliance.
Described as a “rousing spy thriller,” Andor should push Star Wars into a genre that it hasn’t explored much. After a few delays, Andor is set to release sometime in 2022.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi
Set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi will follow the famed Jedi Master as he tries to cope with the psychological aftermath of Order 66. All the while, he is busy protecting a young Luke Skywalker on Tatooine. Joining Ewan McGregor as the titular character, Joel Edgerton will be back as Owen Lars, and Bonnie Piesse will once again portray Beru Lars. Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader and Sung Kang as the Fifth Brother will provide the series’ villains, and based on training videos, lightsaber combat is expected.
The show, which will be comprised of six hour-long episodes, is expected to debut sometime in 2022.
Star Wars: The Acolyte
Led by Netflix’s Russian Doll creator, Leslye Headland, Star Wars: The Acolyte is a female-centric project that is set in the final days of the High Republic era. The official description for the show calls it “a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers.” What all of that means is up for debate. Some have hypothesized that Darth Plagueis could make an appearance. Others think that The Acolyte will finally explain why the Jedi of the prequel era had lost their way.
Either way, the series won’t release until late 2022 at the earliest, but a 2023 release date is more likely.
Star Wars: Ahsoka
It wasn’t long after Rosario Dawson made her live-action debut as Ahsoka Tano in Season 2 of The Mandalorian that Disney announced that she would be getting her own series as the character. Ahsoka’s been a fan-favorite ever since The Clone Wars, and fans were thrilled to hear that they would get to see her character get more screen time with her own story.
Although details are currently slim, Star Wars: Ahsoka’s plot will likely be based around Ahsoka’s search for Ezra and Thrawn following the season finale of Star Wars Rebels. A 2023 release date is a reasonable estimate for Ahsoka’s debut episode.
Star Wars: Lando
The final Star Wars project in development is Star Wars: Lando. Justin Simien (Dear White People) is in the early stages of developing the series, but other than that, almost nothing is known about Lando at this time. The series could be live-action or animated, and the era that it is set in is also not known.
2023 would be a reasonable estimation for premiere, but Disney has not even alluded to a release window for the show.
