The Lannisters were one of the major players in Game Of Thrones, being featured and focused on in equal measure with the Targaryens and Starks. With a lion as their sigil, the Lannisters were all about pride, power, strength and generally being fierce and formidable.
The family name was made to be a prominent and contentious topic within the series, with Tywin Lannister especially focusing all his time and intellect on doing whatever he had to for the good of the family name. Every member of the Lannister family that was featured in the series had different journeys and character development, with them each applying varying degrees of wit and intelligence to situations within the cruel and unforgiving world of Game Of Thrones.
7 Lancel Was Merely Used As A Tool For Other People’s Ideals
Starting off as the hapless cousin of Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion, as well as serving wine to Robert Baratheon and playing his role as a pawn in the downfall of the king, Lancel Lannister later returned reborn as member of the Sparrows following his previous arrow-wound almost killing him.
The son of Kevan never acted on his own accord, showing only signs of obedience rather than any self-sufficient thinking and planning. He did report to Cersei that her order to withdraw Joffrey from the battlements during the Battle of Blackwater was harming morale, but this was obvious for everyone to see, apart from the mother who was worried about her son.
6 Joffrey, Tommen, & Myrcella Were Evil, Naïve, And Innocent, Respectively, To Their Own Detriment
The alleged children of Cersei and Robert Baratheon, Joffrey, Tommen and Myrcella, were eventually revealed to be Cersei and Jaime’s children, the result of a huge scandal that kicked off the major events of Game Of Thrones.
Joffrey and Tommen would both become kings, being cruel and naïve respectively, with both being too young and inexperienced to command and strategize without significant help before their eventual demises. Myrcella was only really seen as a child and later being sent off to Dorne while being used as a pawn in the conflict between the Lannisters and the Martells. All three of the children rarely displayed any signs of intelligence, a considerable fall from grace considering the intellect of Tywin and the lengths he went to in order to further the Lannister name and reputation.
5 Jaime Was More Effective With The Sword Than With Politics And Intellect
Famed more for his good looks and skill with a sword than his smarts and intelligence, Jaime became synonymous with the King’s Guard, serving and protecting kings. Jaime would go to enact plans, whether they involved instilling peace or instigating war, but was not often shown exercising any strategic expertise.
He was even condemned by his father for foolish actions, but it turned into him being taught by Tywin, with him hoping that some of the information would stick and help improve his son’s decision making.
4 Kevan Was Happier To Follow And Support Than Lead Himself
Tywin’s brother Kevan, was seemingly happy to follow his brother rather than holding ambitions to lead himself. He was loyal and useful to his brother, in acting out their family’s domination and control throughout Westeros, but did not really use his own wits and intellect.
Upon Tywin’s death, Kevan refused to acknowledge Cersei as the new head of the family and only resurfaced at King’s Landing when she was being shunned and punished by the High Sparrow. Kevan was unable to predict his demise at the trial within the Sept, as no one else could have seen it coming.
3 Cersei’s Scheming Wiped Out Families And Their Legacies
Cersei’s intelligence and trickery arguably stems from studying and learning from her father, Tywin Lannister, for many years. While Jaime sought a career of fighting and glory, and Tywin hated and blamed Tyrion for the death of his wife, Cersei saw her chance to gain power and control through her sons and apply all that knowledge.
Devising a plan to utilize wildfire that had long been abandoned beneath the surface to wipe out several of her enemies in one go, was equal parts stupidity and genius, as it eliminated both her direct opposition and allies. Regardless, the plan was made possible by the help and smarts of Qyburn, simply imposing Cersei’s will rather than her doing it herself. She is easily placed between Jaime and Tyrion in terms of intelligence regarding Tywin’s children.
2 Tyrion Was A True Believer Of The Pen Being Mightier Than The Sword
With “I drink and I know things” being Tyrion’s main catchphrase, naturally Tyrion is considered to be one of the brightest minds and most clever people of Westeros. He took pride in his knowledge and intellect, considering it to make up for his physical and combative shortcomings, although his father Tywin did not seem to agree.
However, Tyrion became so confident that he was the smartest man to have ever lived, that when serving as Daenerys’s Hand of the Queen, a handful of his strategies failed, ultimately prompting the Targaryen’s rage and impatience to bubble and build up. This does not diminish his general intellect, simply his ability to predict and strategize around enemy movements in the heat of war.
1 Tywin Reconstructed And Revitalized The Family Name With Meticulous Planning & Execution
Until his death, every move that Tywin Lannister made was for the benefit of his family, whether it was coming from a selfish standpoint or a necessary strategical ploy. While he was unaware of the scandal involving his children Cersei and Jaime, he was instrumental in the Boltons and Freys betraying the Starks at the Red Wedding, among many other significant moments in the history of Westeros.
Even when Joffrey was the king, Tywin held more authority and a more apparent sense of power than his grandson, simply with his commanding presence. He may have rebuilt his family name following the failings of his own father, but with all his cunning strategies and plots, he neglected to make meaningful relationships with his children, ultimately spelling their inevitable doom.
