Westworld star Thandiwe Newton believes that the sci-fi drama’s first season was the show’s best work so far.
Thandiwe Newton, who stars as the host Maeve Millay on HBO’s Westworld, said that she believes the sci-fi drama’s first season was its best.
“The first season [of Westworld] was the real epiphany,” Newton told Inverse while promoting her new film, Reminiscence. “After that, I feel like we’re in an entertaining show, honestly. And that’s not to discredit the show. I love the show. I think it’s wonderful. But it’s all about the origin story, isn’t it really? The origin story of Westworld is profound and had a massive impact.”
Both critics and fans seem to agree with Newton. The first season of Westworld is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 87% critics score and a 92% audience score. Season 2 is also Certified Fresh with an 85% critic rating. However, the audience score dropped 16 points to 76%. While Season 3 is also Certified Fresh, its critical score fell 13 points to 73%. The audience rating took another steep dive, earning just 65%.
The lower audience and critic scores are reflected in the show’s ratings. The Season 3 finale, “Crisis Theory,” was watched by 888,000 live viewers, the second-highest rating of the season after the Season 3 premiere. This was an 18% decline from the Season 2 finale numbers.
Despite the falling scores and ratings, HBO still renewed Westworld for Season 4 back in April of 2020. It was also reported that, as part of showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan deal with the premium network, the series would also return for Seasons 5 and 6. However, Nolan denied these reports. “We’ve never actually talked about how many seasons that plan was, and indeed I think when we had the plan it didn’t actually map out to a specific number of seasons, exactly” he said. “It was a beginning, a middle and an end.”
Production on Season 4 is currently underway after a short delay due to a positive COVID-19 test on set. Aurora Perrineau has reportedly joined the cast in an undisclosed role and will appear in at least five episodes.
Joy also teased new worlds for the upcoming season and an appearance from an actor who stars in Reminiscence, which she wrote and directed. “You’re going to see some new worlds that I think are really fun and you’re going to see someone who I kidnapped from Reminiscence in a funny way,” she said.
