WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Eternals, now in theaters.
One of the most unique things about the Marvel Cinematic Universe at present is how it moved away moved away from the Avengers and their collision course with Thanos. Phase Four, as Shang-Chi’s solo film has proven, is wild, unpredictable and setting the stage for new heroes and villains, especially with the multiverse in disarray. With that in mind, let’s break down how Eternals sets the stage for villains far worse than Thanos.
Knull
In Eternals’ post-credits, Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) reveals the Ebony Blade, with Blade then contacting him for a secret mission. While fans are focused on them hunting vampires or other creatures of the night, Dane’s sword could bring Knull into the MCU. Knull’s the symbiote god, who’s got cosmic dragons and other beings like Venom at his disposal, and he is someone who’s been a thorn in Thor’s side in the comics.
With Venom now in the MCU, Knull may have eyes on Earth, and seeing as the Ebony Blade is speaking to Dane, the villain could be the next threat. It’d be similar to the source material where he swept through and consumed planets a la the Annihilation Wave, seeking the sword out as it was forged from a meteor and used by Mister E as a weapon against Knull. Thus, it’d make sense he’d want to harness its power for his own.
Malekith even turned it into his own version of Knull’s All-Black the Necrosword, so the MCU can actually retcon things to make the Ebony Blade this weapon. The blade’s talking to Dane as well, with black goo covering it, which speaks to how it wants impure beings of rage to wield it, crafting the perfect setup to summon Knull to invade, akin to how the Ten Rings got marooned on the planet and are acting as a beacon. It’s the perfect set up for the Eternals, Black Knight, Blade and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to unite.
Galactus
In the source material, the space explorer, Galan of Taa, was imbued with powers after bonding with Sentience of the Universe, gestating for billions of years in an egg made of the debris of his ship that the current universe formed after the Big Bang. He then became the Devourer of Worlds, Galactus, feeding on planets and keeping order in a warped way.
Ironically, he had a celestial parasite in him, so the MCU can retcon things to have Galactus be Arishem’s weapon. As Arishem is the judge and has the Eternals in his keep, he could unleash Galactus to dole out punishment. It can be a new version of Exitar the Executioner, as Galactus fits the purpose and size in terms of a giant that course-corrects.
It’d organically fit the MCU. Plus, with Tiamut’s carcass and the Eternals unleashing cosmic energy, it could also create the Fantastic Four or mutants to join the fight as Galactus aims to consume or plant a new celestial seed. Either way, Galactus as a destroyer is the powerhouse threat the Avengers need all hands on deck for, and having him go rogue, maybe even devouring other planets, would also prove to Arishem his methods may not be right. This would allow the Guardians and such to partake in the new war too.
Marvel’s Greek Gods
In the recent Guardians of the Galaxy comics, the Greek Gods have been reborn and are trying to destroy planets to empower themselves and their roving Olympus. Now, the MCU has another organic opening for them in that Arishem may realize his Eternals project is flawed, just like how he tried to create the Deviants as an army to purge and prep planets.
Thus, these Gods can become the third version of his experiment, creating warriors from his Forge and producing Olympus, akin to Asgard. They’d basically be the new Eternals, hunting down loose ends such as Thena, Druig and Makkari. It’d provide a threat for the heroes as they partner with Starfox and Pip to rescue their loved ones and create competition for Thor and the Guardians.
As the new ‘children’ of the Celestial movement, they may also want Star Lord, aka Ego’s son, dead, viewing him as blasphemy. As such, Arishem could convert Zeus, Athena and co. into this new kill squad to clean up the mistakes of his species. More so, with Hercules there, it’d add that familiar family conflict Ikaris, Sersi and the others went through, giving way for rebellion as these new soldiers go on the rampage.
To see how Arishem’s project sets up new threats, Eternals is in theaters now.
