Eternals producer Nate Moore likens the plot of the upcoming MCU film to a road trip — an unusually long one, with a group of lifelong friends.
Eternals producer Nate Moore recently likened the plot of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film to a long road trip.
“It’s a little bit like being on a road trip with nine of your closest friends for 7,000 years,” Moore told Entertainment Weekly. “In development, we joked that it’s like if Tony Stark and Steve Rogers lived together for that long.”
Moore further teased that, because the members of the Eternals have coexisted for so long, it’s likely those friendships will eventually enter the “frenemies” zone, adding “…And then turn into enemies, and then come back to friendship because you have that common bond. It’s like a family.”
During the same conversation, Marvel President Kevin Feige added that they probably wouldn’t have made a film based on the Eternals if they hadn’t secured director Chloé Zhao. “We thought, here’s a filmmaker who is equal parts cinematic visionary and genre nerd,” Feige told the outlet. “She can outtalk any of us when it comes to manga and Star Wars and Marvel comics. It’s quite an astounding combination. And this movie, I think, represents all of the immense multitudes of Chloé.”
Actor Kumail Nanjiani, who portrays Kingo in the film, also praised Zhao, saying, “She’s just one of the greatest filmmakers ever, and she’s at the height of her powers right now. Working with someone like that, you’d think it’d be intimidating, but it was the opposite. I just felt very safe. I was like, ‘Oh, she’s not going to let me suck at this.'”
For her part, Zhao admitted she was drawn to the project because of the visuals in Jack Kirby’s original 1976 comic book series. Specifically, the Oscar-winning direct recalled thinking, “…I can go as big and as epic as our meaning in the cosmos, but I can also go intimate and explore all of the internal struggles we have as human beings. Because these characters have lived among us for so long, [they have] the same struggles like identity, purpose, faith, personal freedom versus greater good — all the duality and flaws that make us human.”
Marvel’s official synopsis for Eternals is below:
